Digital Compositing for Film and Video

release date: Dec 05, 2001
Digital Compositing for Film and Video
Digital Compositing for Film and Video is a hands-on, practical, how-to guide that addresses the problems and difficult choices faced by the professional compositor in real-life situations. It presents techniques, tricks, and solutions for dealing with badly shot elements, coloration artifacts, and mismatched lighting that bedevil actual compositors working on real shots. Readers are offered in-depth practical methods for matte extraction, despill procedures, compositing operations, and color correction--the "meat and potatoes" of all digital effects. Compositing is the artistic blending of several disparate elements from a variety of sources into a single image while making all the component elements appear to be in the same light space and shot with the same camera. When confronted with a bad composite any observer will recognize that something is wrong--the artist will know what is causing the problem, and the technician will know how to fix it. A good compositor must be both an artist and a technician. Written by a senior compositor with over ten years'' experience in both feature film and broadcast television, this book offers a broad range of alternative solutions that will save hours of fiddling with composites trying to get them to look right when the basic tools aren''t working. A companion CD-ROM provides examples of the many topics covered in this book.

Turning Everyday Conversations into Gospel Conversations

release date: Nov 01, 2016
Turning Everyday Conversations into Gospel Conversations
We live in a broken world. And the gospel is how God puts broken people back together again. Once we repent and believe in Jesus, God’s Spirit helps us recover and pursue His design. God is the one who created the world and every human being in it. Authors Jimmy Scroggins and Steve Wright outline a reproducible method of sharing the gospel that has been tested in the real world. Turning Everyday Conversations Into Gospel Conversations is a simple strategy to train new and seasoned believers to join God in His reconciliation work. Turning Everyday Conversations Into Gospel Conversations equips believers to use the innovative "3 Circles," a user-friendly evangelistic tool for a new generation. Scroggins and Wright train readers to incorporate the biblical metanarrative, as well as our own personal stories, to tell the good news that Jesus has made a way out of the broken places we find ourselves. Churches around the world are training people to share the gospel using this method. It has proven appeal across generations and cultures. They''ve heard stories about an 8-year-old boy leading his 26-year-old cousin to repent and believe in Jesus and a 70-plus-year-old church member, who had never before shared his faith, leading his Spanish-speaking neighbor to Christ. It’s been used to train the Mixtec in Mexico, Maasai Warriors in Kenya, and prisoners in America. It’s been presented on napkins, in concrete, in the sand, and using tortillas. The 3 Circles work, and this book will train you and your church members to use it. It doesn’t matter if you have been a Christian for decades or days, you can learn to do what God asks us to do—to make His appeal to others through us (2 Cor. 5:20). This short training manual will empower and inspire millions of Christians to turn hundreds of millions of everyday conversations into gospel conversations.

Storming Heaven

release date: Feb 20, 2002
Storming Heaven
''The emergence of a new wave of anti-capitalist activism on the streets of Seattle, Prague and Genoa has been accompanied by a growing interest in "autonomist Marxism." Steve Wright’s study brilliantly illuminates the history, complexity and internal debates of this tradition ... A vital, lucid contribution to understanding how the red threads of Marxism are being rewoven into the fabric of twenty-first century radicalism.'' Nick Dyer-Witheford, author of Cyber-Marx Storming Heaven is the first comprehensive survey of Italian autonomist theory, from its origins in the anti-stalinist and workerist left of the 1950s to its heyday twenty years later. Autonomist marxism was a political tendency which privileged themes--self-organisation, construction of identity, grassroots politics, subjects in struggle--which in many ways can be seen as the precursor of today''s debates around direct action protest. Emphasising the dynamic nature of class struggle as the distinguishing feature of autonomist thought, Wright explores how its understanding of class politics developed alongside emerging social movements. Offering a critical and historical exploration of the tendency''s emergence in postwar Italy, Storming Heaven moves beyond the crisis of traditional analytical frameworks on the left, and assesses the strengths and limitations of autonomist marxism as first developed by Antonio Negri, Mario Tronti, Sergio Bologna and others.

The Price

release date: Feb 02, 2009
The Price
A middle aged father has a secret. His son was raised to believe his dad served honorably in the Army as a Military Policeman in Vietnam. Now his son is 18 years old, and it is time to tell him the truth about how his dad had spent a year in Canada as a draft resistor before finally succumbing to the draft and serving in Vietnam. The father had struggled with how to explain his actions since the day a family member spilled the beans about his days as a draft dodger in Canada several years ago. Back then he promised to explain it all to his son when he turned 18. Now that his son turned 18, it is time to keep his promise and try and explain the sequence of events that led to his decision to go to Canada and then return to the USA to face the consequences of resisting the draft. The father hoped his explanation would help his son understand the world better and not make some of the same mistakes he had made. Moreover, his son had always been a responsible young man and the father did not want this to change. He was concerned that somehow, the sins of the father might be visited on the son by revealing the truth about his past. The father spends months preparing himself and then tells the story to his son while they are visiting his old Army buddy and taking a skiing vacation in Vermont. The story he tells traces the major events in the fathers life from the time when the brother of a close neighborhood friend was killed in Vietnam in 1965 to the time when the father was released from the Army in 1973. The son takes it all in, but the father has no way of knowing what impact, if any, his story will ultimately have on his son.

Quadratic Residues and Non-Residues

release date: Nov 11, 2016
Quadratic Residues and Non-Residues
This book offers an account of the classical theory of quadratic residues and non-residues with the goal of using that theory as a lens through which to view the development of some of the fundamental methods employed in modern elementary, algebraic, and analytic number theory. The first three chapters present some basic facts and the history of quadratic residues and non-residues and discuss various proofs of the Law of Quadratic Reciprosity in depth, with an emphasis on the six proofs that Gauss published. The remaining seven chapters explore some interesting applications of the Law of Quadratic Reciprocity, prove some results concerning the distribution and arithmetic structure of quadratic residues and non-residues, provide a detailed proof of Dirichlet’s Class-Number Formula, and discuss the question of whether quadratic residues are randomly distributed. The text is a valuable resource for graduate and advanced undergraduate students as well as for mathematicians interested in number theory.

Uniqueness of the Injective III1 Factor

release date: Nov 14, 2006
Uniqueness of the Injective III1 Factor
Based on lectures delivered to the Seminar on Operator Algebras at Oakland University during the Winter semesters of 1985 and 1986, these notes are a detailed exposition of recent work of A. Connes and U. Haagerup which together constitute a proof that all injective factors of type III1 which act on a separable Hilbert space are isomorphic. This result disposes of the final open case in the classification of the separably acting injective factors, and is one of the outstanding recent achievements in the theory of operator algebras. The notes will be of considerable interest to specialists in operator algebras, operator theory and workers in allied areas such as quantum statistical mechanics and the theory of group representations.

The Weight of the Printed Word

release date: Aug 16, 2021
The Weight of the Printed Word
In The Weight of the Printed Word, Steve Wright explores the creation and use of documents as a key dimension in the activities of the Italian workerists during the 1960s and 1970s. From leaflets and newspapers to books, internal documents and workers’ enquiries; the operaisti deployed a wide variety of printed materials in their efforts to organise amongst new subjectivities of mass rebellion. As Wright demonstrates, the practice of working with print was a central part of what it meant to be a workerist or autonomist militant during these years: one that throws light both on the meaning of political engagement, as well as the challenges posed by the use of technologies of communication and by emergent social subjects.
