The use of herbicide weed control has been an integral part of farm management for several decades due to being an efficient and cost-effective alternative to mechanical weed control management. However, repeated use of broad spectrum herbicides has resulted in herbicide resistance in several weed species (Norsworthy et al., 2012). Although the indiscriminate use of herbicides has been linked to the quick and widespread adoption of herbicide resistant crop species (Fernandez-Cornejo et al., 2014), research indicates that herbicide resistance predated the introduction of bio-tech crops by several decades (WSSA, 2016). By the time that USDA began tracking the adoption of biotech soybean production in 2000, over half of US acreage were planted to herbicide-tolerant varieties and reached over 90% within 7 years (USDA NASS) (Figure 1). By 2013, 90% of corn and soybean acreage were planted to bio-tech cultivars including herbicide-tolerate only and stacked genes (Figure 1). Currently, 470 unique cases of herbicide resistance have been documented (Heap, 2016). Multiple herbicide-resistant weed species causes additional concern due to reduced herbicide options and increased weed control costs. Multiple herbicide resistance has been confirmed in economically important weeds including Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) (Nandula et al. 2012), waterhemp (Amaranthus tuberculatus Sauer) (Bell et al., 2013), horseweed (Conyza canadensis L. Cronq.) (Davis et al. 2009), rigid ryegrass (Lolium rigidum Gaudim) (Owen et al. 2014), and kochia (Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrad.) (Foes et al. 1999) (see Heap, 2016, for more details on herbicide resistance weeds).

How Quickly Do Farmers Adopt Technology? A Non-Parametric Duration Analysis of Kansas Farmers' Adoption
Precision technologies have been available at the farm level for decades. However, the rate at which adoption occurs varies. Some technologies have been readily adopted while others lagged. Analysis of 608 Kansas farms provided insights regarding duration of adoption. The lag, in years, between technologies becoming commercially available and adopted were evaluated using non-parametric duration analysis. Duration for embodied-knowledge technologies were statistically sooner than for information-intensive technologies, indicating farmers adopt automated guidance ''quicker'' than yield monitors. Duration was indirectly (directly) proportional to commercialization date of embodied-knowledge (information-intensive) technology. Results are useful to farmers considering adoption, retailers targeting customers, and manufacturers managing supply chains.

Peanut farmers'' acreage allocation and equipment management decisions remain heavily dependent upon weather uncertainty. The number of days suitable for fieldwork (DSFW) were evaluated during key production times for 11 peanut-producing states. The objectives of this analysis were to define most active dates for peanut planting and harvest field activities, to estimate DSFW occurring within the most active date ranges for each peanut producing state, and to analyze these DSFW data for trends over time. Crop progress data reflects when producers are most likely to engage in field work not necessarily the most agronomically advantageous time. Weekly USDA NASS data from 1995 to 2018 for planting and from 1995 to 2017 for harvest were analyzed to develop a probability distribution. Comparing the middle of the distribution, the 50th percentile, shows that North Carolina had the fewest days available for planting (16.4 days) while Arkansas has the most days for planting (34.0 days). Georgia, for comparison, had 23.0 days for planting. For harvest at the 50th percentile, Arkansas has one of the fewest days available for harvest (23.0 days) and South Carolina has the most available (40.0 days). Georgia had 34.0 days available for harvest. These results are useful for farmers, practitioners, and researchers for decision making including determining the number of acres that can be planted and/or harvested in a given year based on weather risk. Sizing equipment to complete field work only for the maximum DSFW leaves no contingency for poor field conditions or equipment failure. These results are important for farm decision makers to make machinery selection and acreage allocation decisions. As an added benefit of this paper, the R programming code used to access and develop graphs have been made available for readers to use in their own research.

For many Christian workers in the United States, this practice often fits with their work schedule as Saturday and Sunday are typical days off for many schools, government organizations, and businesses. There are exceptions to this and farmers are one of the most obvious. The demands of managing a farm do not conform to uniform weekly work schedules. To meet labor requirements, many American family farms rely upon unpaid family labor to perform farm tasks such as conducting field operations. Reliance on unpaid labor is becoming more prevalent due to lack of available unskilled laborers in many locations in the United States.
