Thomas Mathewson's 1805 Fencing Familiarised

release date: Nov 01, 2010
Thomas Mathewson's 1805 Fencing Familiarised
This new edition of Mathewson''s work is intended to be useful to those wishing to recreate the training regime of one particular fencing master from the reign of George III. This particular manual is of relevance and use because it seems to have been written with the intention of offering instruction at varying levels starting with the complete beginner and is therefore, unlike many earlier manuals and indeed some contemporary ones, suitable for those modern fencing masters who have recruits to teach. One envisages it as being of value to three categories of people, as well as hopefully being of interest to those with a more general interest in the history of fencing. Firstly to those within the Western Martial Arts community who may wish to study a different master''s works from the earlier ones that seem to be the most commonly followed. Secondly I hope it will be of value to those re-enactors who portray the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century enabling them to produce a more authentic representation of sword work of that period and for displays away from the battlefield I particularly draw their attention to the drill en masse as presented in appendix 1 which would make an interesting display in those circumstances where fighting may not be appropriate. Finally, this work may be of some value to those staging theatrical events in that it gives these a grounding of correct sword moves and postures. Indeed to all the foregoing the particular value of this work is that it draws attention to the differences between sword drill as taught and practised in the Napoleonic period and the modern versions of it that are based, as is modern sport sabre, on the late Victorian sabre drill as exemplified by Alfred Hutton''s works.

Funny, moving, insightful, these stories are, above all, delightfully different. A well-known poet pursues his elusive muse; a Kiwi makes himself indispensable in OZ; a revolutionary fast-food franchise revs up Russia''s economy; a racing-car driver is airborne; a Frenchman called Foucault puts in the hard yards at an antipodean dairy farm - all while water laps at our feet, our homes, our lives . . . With Tim Jones'' stories you should expect the unexpected. This remarkably refreshing collection uses a lively mix of genres, taking readers on flights of fancy, transports of delight and even occasional trips of nostalgia. Some of the stories are unique ways of looking at the everyday and ordinary, others take us out of this world.

Artificial Intelligence: A Systems Approach

release date: Dec 26, 2008
Artificial Intelligence: A Systems Approach
This book offers students and AI programmers a new perspective on the study of artificial intelligence concepts. The essential topics and theory of AI are presented, but it also includes practical information on data input & reduction as well as data output (i.e., algorithm usage). Because traditional AI concepts such as pattern recognition, numerical optimization and data mining are now simply types of algorithms, a different approach is needed. This “sensor / algorithm / effecter” approach grounds the algorithms with an environment, helps students and AI practitioners to better understand them, and subsequently, how to apply them. The book has numerous up to date applications in game programming, intelligent agents, neural networks, artificial immune systems, and more. A CD-ROM with simulations, code, and figures accompanies the book.

A Dreamer's Diary

release date: Dec 17, 2007
A Dreamer's Diary
"A Dreamers Diary, Dethroning the Underachiever" is a compilation of poems that are designed to insight the mind, encourage the heart, inspire the will, and raise the spirit. These four pillars are the foundation of what is known as motivational poetry. This special kind of poetry invites readers to participate in the process of healing and growing by learning how to shape what they think and feel rather than just express it. A reader can go from searching for significance to reaching for greatness by discovering his ability to overcome his obstacles, endure his struggles, and outlast his troubles. This book addresses low self esteem, inaccurate identity, and misguided direction, as well as depression, oppression, and suppression and does so with an emphasis on the need to dream. A Dreamers Diary is an excellent resource material for teachers, counselors, coaches, facilitators, students, or anyone seeking to elevate their thinking to match their true ability and is an excellent read for lovers of poetry or those who simply need encouragement.

SAS: The First Secret Wars

release date: Apr 22, 2005
SAS: The First Secret Wars
The covert, clandestine operations of the Special Air Service (SAS) regiment, from the jungles of Malaya, Borneo and Brunei to the deserts and mountains of the Middle East and Afghanistan have always been the focus of intense fascination, stoked by the regiment''s ''closed'' organization and secretive activities. However, no period of activity has remained more secret than the vital years in the immediate aftermath of World War II when the regiment seemingly expired, only to rise miraculously from the dead to fight communism in the Malaya Emergency. Tim Jones'' fascinating history pieces together the evidence to show that while the Malaya Emergency re-established the SAS as a unique source of counter-guerilla expertise, the regiment was not disbanded in 1945 and was, in fact, covertly involved in the Greek Civil War of 1945-49, a war unmatched in savagery until the Bosnian conflict in the 1990s. Revealing important operational secrets and shedding new light on post-war history, this book will be essential reading for enthusiasts of military history, and those interested in the world of intelligence.

release date: Apr 19, 2005
Gnu/Linux Application Programming (W/Cd)
The wide range of applications available in GNU/Linux includes not only pure applications, but also tools and utilities for the GNU/Linux environment. GNU/Linux Application Programming, Second Edition takes a holistic approach to teaching developers the ins-and-outs of GNU/Linux user-space programming using APIs, tools, communication, and scripting. The book is split into 5 parts, covering introduction/architecture, major tools (such as GCC, make, etc.), application development topics (such as important libraries and interfaces such as POSIX), shells and scripting, and testing, performance, and debugging. The book introduces programmers to the environment from the lowest layers (kernel, device drivers, modules) to the user layer (applications, libraries, tools), using an evolutionary approach that builds on knowledge to cover the more complex aspects of the operating system.

New Product Development

release date: Jan 01, 1997
New Product Development
New Product Development presents a unique cross-discipline approach to new product development and goes further than most ''product design'' books by drawing together the various strands that make up ''total design'' now the accepted way to develop new products. The successful development of new products has become a complex process involving contributions from a range of different disciplines. Rarely is one individual responsible for the inception, creation and realisation of a new product, for today the inherent complexity of products, markets and the processes through which they are developed dictates that a number of functions, each with their own roles, work together to create the product. This book presents a cross-discipline discussion of new product development, its organisation, its management, the key stages and key functions involved. Through the use of six major case studies and numerous mini-cases, the author demonstrates how a number of manufacturing companies have successfully illustrated separate elements into the new product development process. Extensive use of photographs Includes case studies of Rover, Flymo, Logitech and Polaroid Provides a balanced overview of an often misunderstood process
