The Legacy of Cornelius Cardew

release date: Mar 03, 2016
The Legacy of Cornelius Cardew
Cornelius Cardew is an enigma. Depending on which sources one consults he is either an influential and iconic figure of British musical culture or a marginal curiosity, a footnote to a misguided musical phenomenon. He is both praised for his uncompromising commitment to world-changing politics, and mocked for being blindly caught up in a maelstrom of naïve political folly. His works are both widely lauded as landmark achievements of the British avant-garde and ridiculed as an archaic and irrelevant footnote to the established musical culture. Even the events of his death are shrouded in mystery and lack a sense of closure. As long ago as 1967, Morton Feldman cited Cardew as an influential figure, central to the future of modern music-making. The extent to which Cardew has been a central figure and a force for new ideas in music forms the backbone to this book. Harris demonstrates that Cardew was an original thinker, a charismatic leader, an able facilitator, and a committed activist. He argues that Cardew exerted considerable influence on numerous individuals and groups, but also demonstrates how the composer''s significance has been variously underestimated, undermined and misrepresented. Cardew''s diverse body of work and activity is here given coherence by its sharing in the values and principles that underpinned the composer''s world view. The apparently disparate and contradictory episodes of Cardew''s career are shown to be fused by a cohesive ''Cardew aesthetic'' that permeates the man, his politics and his music.

Adherens Junctions: from Molecular Mechanisms to Tissue Development and Disease

release date: Jun 07, 2012
Adherens Junctions: from Molecular Mechanisms to Tissue Development and Disease
Cell–cell adhesion is fundamental for the development and homeostasis of animal tissues and organs. Adherens junctions (AJs) are the best understood cell-cell adhesion complexes. In this volume, a group of internationally recognized experts reviews AJ biology over a wide range of organization; from atoms to molecules, to protein complexes, molecular networks, cells, tissues, and overall animal development. AJs have also been an integral part of animal evolution, and play central roles in cancer development, pathogen infection and other diseases. This book addresses major questions encompassing AJ biology. • How did AJs evolve? • How do cadherins and catenins interact to assemble AJs and mediate adhesion? • How do AJs interface with other cellular machinery to couple adhesion with the whole cell? • How do AJs affect cell behaviour and multicellular development? • How can abnormal AJ activity lead to disease?

release date: Jul 01, 2006
Sailing with the Stars
This is a detective thriller, packed with action and suspense, for the young, both boys and girls, the young at heart, and those who wish they still were. Care has been taken to ensure the non-nautical reader won''t feel all at sea, so to give these shipmates a hand, the sometimes unusual phraseology is explained. But the author does want you to really feel you are climbing the ratlines, hauling yourself up by your cold hands grasping the greasy rigging, whilst you look up at the mast head swaying across the dark threatening clouds, before climbing onto the yardarm to bundle up the sail. It''s also possible that some might think the idea of Knights Templar being involved is just a bit fanciful. Be assured there are still some afloat today. In this case, four teenage pupils from the Knights Templar School in the west of England (yes, it does exist!) outwit a criminal gang, the police and the customs, but delight the intelligence agencies.
