The Journals of Lewis and Clark

release date: Oct 01, 2023
The Journals of Lewis and Clark
At the dawn of the 19th century, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark embarked on an unprecedented journey from St. Louis, Missouri to the Pacific Ocean and back again. Their assignment was to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory and record the geography, flora, fauna, and people they encountered along the way. The tale of their incredible journey, meticulously recorded in their journals, has become an American classic. This single-volume, landmark edition of the famous journals is the first abridgement to be published in at least a decade. Series editor Anthony Brandt and Lewis and Clark scholar Herman J. Viola have reviewed all 13 volumes of the text to include a more balanced account of encounters with Native Americans and have, for the first time in print, corrected Lewis and Clark s famously bad spelling. This new edition presents the journey s impressive highlights--from first encounters with grizzly bears and meetings with the Sioux and Crow Indians, to the near starvation in the Bitterroot Mountains and confrontation with the Blackfeet Indians. Brief connecting accounts from the editors seamlessly link connected passages and illuminate details of the expedition that are missing or obscure in the text. Featuring an expedition map, an introduction by Anthony Brandt that describes America at the start of Lewis and Clark s amazing journey, and an afterword by Herman Viola that illuminates the historical significance of the mission, this single-volume edition brings to life the epic grandeur of the greatest adventure in American history.

The Province of Midwives in the Practice of their Art

release date: May 19, 2021
The Province of Midwives in the Practice of their Art
In "The Province of Midwives in the Practice of their Art," William Clark meticulously explores the role and evolving practices of midwives in early modern society. Through a blend of historical analysis and nuanced narrative, Clark delves into the significant contributions midwives made to childbirth and maternal health while addressing the often contentious relationship between midwifery and emerging medical professionals. His literary style balances scholarly rigor with accessible prose, situating the midwife within broader socio-cultural dynamics of the period and illuminating their sometimes overlooked expertise in obstetrics, thereby enriching our understanding of women''s roles in healthcare history. William Clark is a prominent historian whose academic pursuits have long focused on the intersection of gender, medicine, and childbirth. His extensive research into medical practices, coupled with a personal commitment to historical preservation, has equipped him with a deep understanding of the complexities faced by midwives. Clark''Äôs background in both history and gender studies has uniquely positioned him to articulate the vital narratives surrounding midwifery, revealing its implications on contemporary societal perceptions of women''Äôs health. For scholars, practitioners, and those intrigued by gender studies and medical history, Clark''s work is an invaluable resource. It challenges prevailing narratives about childbirth practices and invites readers to reconsider the essential contributions of midwives, making this book a must-read for anyone seeking greater insight into the historical landscape of woman-centric healthcare.

Sensationality

release date: Oct 01, 2006
Sensationality
If the contents of this publication were easy to understand, it would be a much shorter book. It''s easy to wonder why being in love with someone or living in fear is so different from liking or being afraid of one thing or another. Differences arise, because what we "like", for example, is definable but who we "love" isn''t. We assume that all words are definable, but love isn''t, and neither is faith, appreciation, passion, or a host of other words which relate to love. In truth, we can''t define the sensation of fear, sin, or temptation either. Why is it that we give such importance to words which can''t be defined, and why is it that many of our "words", including mind, soul, and God, escape definition when we''re certain that we "know what they mean?" It''s only by "appreciating" certain words, that an "understanding" is achieved. Our relationship with God the Father, Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit are explored. Not in a theological context, but a "sensational" one-not so different from a "sixth sense" perspective. Contents of this book also include considerations of anger, addiction, homosexuality, pain management, and much more. An attempt is made to tie up all these seemingly diverse subjects into one tightly knit package.

The Definitive Journals of Lewis & Clark: Over the Rockies to St. Louis
Since the time of Columbus, explorers dreamed of a water passage across the North American continent. President Thomas Jefferson shared this dream. He conceived the Corps of Discovery to travel up the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains and westward along possible river routes to the Pacific Ocean. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led this expedition of 1804–6. Along the way they filled hundreds of notebook pages with observations of the geography, Indian tribes, and natural history of the trans-Mississippi West. This last volume recounts the expedition''s experiences as they continued their journey homeward from present-day Idaho and the party divided for separate exploration. Lewis probed the northern extent of the Louisiana Purchase on the Marias River, while Clark traveled southeast toward the Yellowstone to explore the river and make contact with local Indians. Lewis''s party suffered from bad luck: they encountered grizzlies, horse thieves, and the expedition''s only violent encounter with Native inhabitants, the Piegan Blackfeet. Lewis was also wounded in a hunting accident. The two parties eventually reunited below the mouth of the Yellowstone and arrived back in St. Louis to a triumphal welcome in September 1806.

Along the way they portaged the difficult Great Falls, encountered grizzly bears, cataloged new species of plants and animals, and mapped rivers and streams.

Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin
This fully documented account of the Ôfirst American'' gives a detailed and lively picture of the writer who invented the lightning conductor; the politician who spent years as emissary in London trying to prevent the American War of Independence; the statesman who, when war came, served as the U.S. representative in Paris, intriguing for French aid and American victory. Distinguished historian and biographer Ronald Clark unravels the story of the successful printer and publisher whose electrical research brought him membership of the Royal Society, whose lobbying work played a part in the repeal of the notorious Stamp Act -- one of the founding Fathers of the U.S. and the author and printer of "Poor Richard''s Almanack." The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition: The journals of Joseph Whitehouse, May 14, 1804-April 2, 1806
The University of Nebraska Press editions of The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition are widely heralded as a lasting achievement. In all, thirteen volumes are projected, which together will provide a complete record of the expedition. Volume 11 contains the journals of expedition member Joseph Whitehouse. His journals are the only surviving account written by an army private on the expedition, and he is one of the least known of the expedition party. Following the expedition, Whitehouse had a checkered army career, and he disappeared after 1817. His capabilities have been unfairly slighted by previous commentators, despite his narrative skill and evidence that he was a man of a lively and curious mind. His extensive journal entries contribute to our understanding of the epochal journey and of the unusual group of men who undertook one of the defining events in our history. The last part of his journals was not found until 1966; this is the first publication of the complete record of his account.

The Greatest Power on Earth

The Greatest Power on Earth
The international interplay of science, politics, and technology in the discovery and development of nuclear fission is traced from the first breakthrough on the structure of the atom after World War I to the present. The overall chronology reveals the sequence of multinational developments in the race to advance nuclear research in Britain, France, Russia, and Germany that was preempted by the US and the Manhattan Project. Communications problems, conflicts between national interests and Allied objectives, private industry''s ambitions and government''s priorities, and personality conflicts at high levels are reported. The narrative continues through the post-World War II period as biological dangers were confirmed, the anti-nuclear movement gathered force, and the Cold War arms race intensified. The story concludes with an exploration of peaceful uses of nuclear power and the Three Mile Island accident debate.

The White Rose of Memphis
"Here is a story of the Mississippi River South in its great days of the steamboat era, by one of its most distinguished citizens. Colonel Falkner, great-grandfather of William Faulkner, Nobel-prize novelist of our time, was a plantation owner, railroad builder, Civil War hero, writer and founder of schools. The White Rose of Memphis, first published in 1881, was the Gone with the Wind of that period; edition after edition kept appearing until about the time of World War I, when it went out of print; since then it has been unobtainable and legendary."--Publishers''s description
