Witness Lee speaks of the church in The Practical Expression of the Church, not only from the viewpoint of God’s eternal purpose, which is the church triumphant and universal, but also from the viewpoint of the believers’ experience and enjoyment of the riches of Christ, which produces a local expression of the church, an expression that displays the oneness of the Body of Christ and brings in God’s commanded blessing (Psalm 133).

In Matthew 13 the Lord Jesus gives a parable concerning a treasure and a parable concerning a pearl. These two parables present the positive condition of the churches in the Lord’s recovery. The testimony of the treasure and the pearl is the gospel that we preach, and the local churches that we establish bear this testimony. If we truly see the testimony of the treasure and the pearl, we will give our all for this. “We should stand firm in faith and preach the gospel of the kingdom…May many saints rise up and be burdened by the Lord to preach the high gospel and establish the testimony of the treasure and the pearl in every town and village. May the Lord have mercy on us.”

Witness Lee begins this book in the following way: "In this book we want to fellowship concerning the crucial matter of our experience and growth in the divine life. As believers in Christ, we have such a marvelous, wonderful, excellent life, the uncreated life of God Himself, the eternal life. But we do not have much experience of this life nor do we have the adequate growth in this divine life. If we are going to experience and grow in the divine life, we must be those who are living in and with the Divine Trinity."

Our central focus is Christ as everything to us. In order to enjoy Christ and express Him, we need the church life, and to have the church life, we need the proper ground. Without the proper, definite ground, how can we come together to have the Body life? To say that we need a definite ground does not mean that we have to choose between two different, but divisive, grounds. It means that we need to come together, not to one certain place or another according to our respective understandings, but to the proper ground of oneness. When we come back to meet on the ground of oneness, we enjoy the Lord with His blessing (Psa. 133). Moreover, it is only when we learn to live in the spirit and exercise our spirit to contact the Lord that we will ever be truly spiritual. Regardless of how much we talk about spirituality and listen to spiritual messages, if we are not living in the spirit and do not know how to exercise our spirit to contact the Lord, we can never have genuine spirituality. These two things are vital—to be on the proper ground and to be in the spirit.

Specifically, God’s plan is to impart, to dispense, this unsearchably rich Christ into His believers. In Enjoying the Riches of Christ for the Building Up of the Church as the Body of Christ, Witness Lee unveils how the church as the Body of Christ is produced by our enjoyment of the unsearchable riches of Christ through His word and by His Spirit. Such an enjoyment causes the believers to grow and be transformed into the precious materials for God’s building. As the believers come together in spirit and in oneness, the work of building is carried out for the glory of God and the defeat of His enemy.

From Romans to the seven epistles in the book of Revelation, the life-giving Spirit, spoken of in 1 Corinthians 15:45, is the general subject of all the New Testament Epistles. In the Gospels the Lord Jesus is presented as the Word who became flesh, while in the Epistles He is presented as the One who became the life-giving Spirit in resurrection for us to receive, experience, and enjoy. In The Spirit in the Epistles Witness Lee speaks of the believers being one spirit with the Lord, that is, of the mingling of the divine Spirit with our regenerated human spirit. Since the Spirit is the essence of the revelation in the Epistles, Witness Lee also emphasizes our practical need to take Christ as life by turning to the indwelling Spirit, by setting our mind on the spirit, and by living and walking in the spirit that we may live in the Lord, who is the Spirit.

It is easy to understand that man has needs, but do we have a sense of God’s need? Indeed, we may even wonder, “Who has a greater need, man or God?” In this book, Witness Lee presents his burden that we would “turn our eyes from the earth to heaven to see a need that is immensely greater than man’s need—God’s need. Without seeing God’s need, it is difficult for people who do not have a sense of need to be saved. Furthermore, without seeing God’s need, it is difficult for those who are saved to have a heavenly living or to obtain power and faith. May these words lead us to see the need on God’s side so that our attention can be shifted from man to God.”

The first three chapters [of this book] give a general discussion of four great matters in the Bible: the economy of God, the dispensing of God, the union of God with His believers, and the corporate expression of God. The subsequent chapters go on to explain the profound truths and the experience of life related to these four great matters according to the book of Ephesians, the Gospel of John, and the Gospel of Matthew. Following this, the book proceeds to offer guidance to all those who have a heart to serve the Lord full time concerning the building up of themselves in the matters of life, truth, character, learning languages, knowing the church, living a healthy life, and managing personal finances as living witnesses of the Lord, so that they may become useful vessels in the Lord''s hands.

"The Bible reveals that God is our enjoyment and that all the riches of God, what God is in His fullness, are the riches of Christ (Eph. 3:8, 19b). All the fullness of God is embodied in Christ (Col. 1:19) and becomes the items of the riches of Christ. The reality of Christ is the Spirit, who is the Spirit of reality (John 14:17), and all that Christ is, that is, all the riches of Christ, are revealed in the Word (1:1). Therefore, in order to know the riches of Christ, we have to know the Word, which is the revelation of all that Christ is. Moreover, the place in which we realize the Triune God is our human spirit (3:6). In order to realize Christ and always enjoy Him, we have to exercise our spirit. There is no other way to enjoy Him, and there is no other organ with which we can enjoy Him. We have to exercise our spirit to realize all that God is in Christ through the Holy Spirit and as revealed in the Word. These five items--God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Word, and our spirit--are the factors of our enjoyment of God." This book affords much guidance in how to enjoy Christ as the Word and the Spirit through prayer.

In every age and generation God comes to young people for the carrying out of His move. Both the Bible and church history show us that God wants to use young people. God comes to young people because they are less likely to be spoiled and preoccupied with the evil things of this age. In Fellowship with the Young People Witness Lee speaks a frank word to today''s youth, encouraging them to be useful to God for His purpose by not defiling themselves with the things of this age. He charges them to flee youthful lust and to pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with proper companions, who also have a heart to pursue the Lord. Witness Lee also presents a clear vision of the contents of the Lord''s recovery, which is our heritage of life and truth that must be guarded and preserved, and gives practical fellowship on how to advance the Lord''s recovery in this age.

The Christian life is one of experiencing Christ at all times. In order to enjoy and experience Christ in full, we need to see who Christ is, what He has done for us, and we especially need to see that we are in an organic union with Christ. This is the most crucial aspect of the secret of experiencing Christ. In The Secret of Experiencing Christ Witness Lee points out that it is in this organic union of the Spirit with our spirit that Christ lives in us and we live in Him.
