The goal of God’s economy is a corporate expression. God created man according to His image and after His likeness so that He might put Himself into man and be man’s life (Gen. 1:26), that man might become one with Him and express and represent Him. In Genesis, God gained one man, Jacob. After being dealt with and transformed by the Lord, Jacob became God’s Israel. By the end of Exodus, God had gained the descendants of Jacob as the nation of Israel, and the tabernacle was erected to be God’s moving habitation on earth for the expression of His glory. At the end of the Old Testament, there was a temple as God’s habitation on earth for the expression of His glory. In the New Testament, the Lord Jesus, who is God Himself, came as a man to be God’s tabernacle on earth so that God might dwell on earth and express Himself (John 1:14, 18). The Lord Jesus passed through death and resurrection to become the life-giving Spirit in order to enter into His believers (20:22). This expanded tabernacle is now God’s habitation on earth for His full expression. This is what God desires, and this is the goal of God’s salvation. He regenerates us, transforms us, makes us spiritual, and causes us to be seeking for this purpose. We are not saved, regenerated, transformed, spiritual, or seeking, for ourselves. Rather, we become such in order to be delivered from the natural life and the self so that we can be built up with all the saints into the reality of God’s habitation. This is the goal of God’s economy and His dispensing.

This book covers two crucial matters in the New Testament: the apostles' teaching and the proper leadership. The apostles' teaching is the entire contents of the New Testament and the unique revelation of God's New Testament economy concerning Christ and the church. It is also the contents of the full gospel of God and the constitution of the Christian faith that we hold as believers in Christ. God created man as a vessel to contain Him. However, in the Garden of Eden, God’s enemy Satan came in and caused man to fall. He usurped and corrupted man. But eventually the Lord Jesus came—God became a man! He lived a human life and went to the cross to die. Through His death, He redeemed man and dealt with all the negative things in the universe, and then He resurrected and brought us into resurrection. “Through Christ’s redemption God was able to achieve the purpose for which He had created man; namely, He was able to put Himself in Christ into us and then bring us back to Himself.”

As Christians, we have been saved and regenerated by God to be members of the Body of Christ and to come together to practice the Body life. This is God’s main and central will for us. The Body life is a basic and foundational matter in the Scriptures, and without it, it is impossible for us to be victorious, spiritual, or holy; to grow in life; or to be built up with other believers as a living expression of Christ. Central to our experience of the Body life is the exercise of our human spirit. God created a spirit within us specifically so that we could contact Him. Once we learn how to exercise our spirit to contact Him, everything that God is and has will become our daily experience. Through such a daily experience, God will be able to fulfill His purpose.

God's intention is to come into man as another life to be man's life. God has no intention to ask us to do good, just as He has no intention to ask us to do evil. His intention is just to ask us to take Him in as life. Only God as life within us can express God. We cannot express God; only God Himself can express God. Hence, we need God as our life. We think that God is someone over us, above us, beside us, or behind us to support, help, and sustain us. In a sense, this is not wrong, but this is not God's central way. God's central way is to get into man to be man's life. This is why God made things so simple by putting man in front of the tree of life.

God's New Testament Economy is a thorough study of the New Testament. It does not provide superficial inspiration nor is it a dry, systematic analysis. Dispensing means to distribute. God dispenses Himself to you just as you may dispense food to your guests. Many readers of the Bible have realized that in the Gospel of John the Father is revealed, the Son is revealed, and the Spirit is revealed. But not many have realized that in the Gospel of John the Triune God—the Father, the Son, and the Spirit—is revealed for the dispensing of Himself into us first as life, then as life supply, and then as everything.

In this life-study, Witness Lee opens up Paul’s second Epistle to the Corinthians, a book on the new covenant ministry and its ministers. The first Epistle to the Corinthians was the apostle’s argument, an argument that defeated and subdued the distracted and confused Corinthians. Now, the second Epistle brought them back into the experience of Christ, who was the subject of his argument in the first Epistle. Hence, the second Epistle is more experiential, more subjective, and deeper than the first. In the first, Christ, the Spirit with our spirit, the church, and the gifts are covered as the major subjects. In the second, Christ, the Spirit with our spirit, and the church are developed further, but the gifts are not even mentioned. The gifts are replaced in this book by the ministry, which is constituted with, and produced and formed by, the experiences of the riches of Christ gained through sufferings, consuming pressures, and the killing work of the cross. This Epistle gives us a pattern, an example, of how the killing of the cross works, how Christ is wrought into our being, and how we become the expression of Christ. These processes constitute the ministers of Christ and produce the ministry for God’s new covenant.

This book contains messages for the teaching, equipping, and training of new believers for their Christian life and church life.
