Avant de s''atteler aux examens professionnels, Hikaru subit un véritable entraînement de guerrier durant ses vacances d''été pour s''améliorer. L''examen démarré, il enchaîne 6 victoires de suite, mais doit enfin affronter le meilleur Inseï : Isumi !

Hikaru a trouvé un troisième membre pour son équipe, Yuki Mitani. Mais ce dernier ne pense qu''à gagner son argent de poche en jouant dans le club de go du quartier contre des adultes et... en trichant ! Quant à Akira Toya, il attend avec impatience le début du tournoi des collèges, bien décidé à affronter Hikaru...

Un jour, Hikaru, 11 ans, trouve dans une remise une vieille table de go. Soudain, surgit de celle-ci le fantôme qui y était enfermé : Saï Fujiwara, un génie du jeu de go de l''époque Heïan (VIIIe à XIIe siècle) s''introduit dans l''esprit de Hikaru. Acceptant de permettre à Saï de jouer au go contre d''autres joueurs, Hikaru fait la connaissance d''Akira Toya, fils du meilleur joueur japonais.

Hikaru a trouvé chez son grand-père un vieux goban et en le touchant, il a levé la malédiction qui retenait prisonnier Saï, un génie du jeu de go de l''époque Heïan. Cette rencontre et celle d''Akira Toya, fils prodige d''un champion de go entraînent Hikaru dans le monde du jeu de go. Après le tournoi des collèges, où l''équipe Hazé de Hikaru a été disqualifiée, laissant la victoire au célèbre collège Kaïo, Hikaru fonde un club de go avec Kimihiro Tsutsui. De son côté, Akira a compris que sa seule chance de disputer une partie avec Hikaru est de participer au prochain tournoi des collèges. Il décide alors de s''inscrire au club de go de Kaïo...
