Love Letters, Lost

Love Letters, Lost
My Dear Sweetheart:

There now: have I made myself clear, and do you see between the lines that I love you very dearly and more constantly from day to day? I am going to turn in now and take this to town with me early tomorrow and tonight I will hug you very close to me and love you ever so much, Sweetie dear.

Fondly and affectionately,

Kenton (I do love you dear)

Love letters. Passionate, sad, ardent, goofy, serious, bittersweet, angry, tragic, frantic, embarrassing, and -- of course -- romantic. We've all written them at one time or another. Some were saved; some were tossed out (the nerve!). Love Letters, Lost is a collection of amorous letters whose fates were, alas, scattered to the wind. Salvaged from flea markets, garage sales, swap meets, and Internet auctions by Babbette Hines, author of our best-selling title Photobooth, they are here paired with vintage photographs of love-struck couples holding hands, laughing, smiling, dancing, and otherwise mugging for the camera.
In this age of generic email cards and text messaging, this beguiling little book reminds us of the simple beauty of an epistolary romance. And just in case you need a little help, Hines has included suggestions from a 1919 booklet on how to write your own letter of love. xoxo

PAST IMPERFECT

release date: Oct 27, 2009
PAST IMPERFECT
Past Imperfect looks into the heart of the influential American photographer Deborah Turbeville's oeuvre, surveying her groundbreaking narrative work of 1974 through 1998, when she pioneered a look of antique decadence, using distressed film and prints to capture models as Miss Havishams in faded fin-de-siecle glory. Some 15 series, structured like short stories or novellas, encapsulate that unique sensibility and elegant aesthetic. They remind the viewer, as one critic has written, of films they would have liked to have seen, and inspire comparisons to Luchino Visconti, Jean Cocteau, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Joel-Peter Witkin.
Turbeville's vision is unorthodox--at once haunted and haunting. She creates those effects with the help of favorite actresses and models, largely unknown, acting as a repertory cast. They interpret her endangered species, anachronisms, out of sync with their time and context, playing mutations in a mannequin workshop, statues in a Paris art school, and automatons in a derelict factory. And they help to create a characteristic sense of fragmented dreams, of dislocation, hallucination and time without boundaries--the past imperfect.
Turbeville began her career working for the avant garde designer Claire McCardell, who she credits as a major influence, and then as a fashion editor for Harper's Bazaar and Mademoiselle. Today, she shoots fashion for international Vogue titles and The New York Times Magazine. Her previous monographs include Wallflower, Newport Remembered, Studio St. Petersburg and Unseen Versailles, which The New York Times described as the expression of "the brilliant idea, which she credits to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis," of photographing the title palace's storerooms and attics. Unseen Versailles won a 1982 American Book Award.

Genesis

release date: Jan 01, 1996
Genesis
Genesis begins with the making of heaven and earth and all life, and ends with the image of a mummy - Joseph's - in a coffin. In between come many of the primal stories in Western culture: Adam and Eve's expulsion from the garden of Eden, Cain's murder of Abel, Noah and the Flood, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham's binding of Isaac, the covenant of God and Abraham, Isaac's blessing of Jacob in place of Esau, the saga of Joseph and his brothers. These are stories we attend to throughout our lives, for their literary power and beauty, their emotional resonance, their philosophical weight, and their sacredness. They connect us with one another and with generations past and future. . In Robert Alter's brilliant translation, these stories cohere in a powerful narrative of the tortuous relations between fathers and sons, husbands and wives, elder and younger brothers, God and his chosen people, the people of Israel and their neighbors. Alter's translation recovers the meanings, literary strategies, and eloquence of the ancient Hebrew and conveys them in striking literary English. The result is a Genesis with the continuity of theme and motif of a wholly conceived and fully realized book. Alter's translation is enhanced by his insightful, fully informed commentary, which illuminates the book in its many dimensions.

What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures

release date: Jan 01, 2004
What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures
What is the difference between choking and panicking? Why are there dozens of varieties of mustard-but only one variety of ketchup? What do football players teach us about how to hire teachers? What does hair dye tell us about the history of the 20th century? In the past decade, Malcolm Gladwell has written three books that have radically changed how we understand our world and ourselves: The Tipping Point; Blink; and Outliers. Now, in What the Dog Saw, he brings together, for the first time, the best of his writing from TheNew Yorker over the same period. Here is the bittersweet tale of the inventor of the birth control pill, and the dazzling inventions of the pasta sauce pioneer Howard Moscowitz. Gladwell sits with Ron Popeil, the king of the American kitchen, as he sells rotisserie ovens, and divines the secrets of Cesar Millan, the "dog whisperer" who can calm savage animals with the touch of his hand. He explores intelligence tests and ethnic profiling and "hindsight bias" and why it was that everyone in Silicon Valley once tripped over themselves to hire the same college graduate. "Good writing," Gladwell says in his preface, "does not succeed or fail on the strength of its ability to persuade. It succeeds or fails on the strength of its ability to engage you, to make you think, to give you a glimpse into someone else's head."What the Dog Saw is yet another example of the buoyant spirit and unflagging curiosity that have made Malcolm Gladwell our most brilliant investigator of the hidden extraordinary.
