A Season in Hell is an extended poem written and published by French writer Arthur Rimbaud. The book had a considerable influence on later artists and poets, for example the Surrealists. Henry Miller was important in introducing Rimbaud to America in the sixties. He once attempted an English translation of the book and wrote an extended essay on Rimbaud and A Season in Hell titled The Time of the Assassins. The poem is loosely divided into nine parts, some of which are much shorter than others. They differ markedly in tone and narrative comprehensibility, with some, such as "Bad Blood," ''being much more obviously influenced by Rimbaud''s drug use than others, some argue. Academic critics have arrived at many varied and often entirely incompatible conclusions as to what meaning and philosophy may or may not be contained in the text, and will continue to do so.

Het einde van de stormachtige vriendschap met Paul Verlaine markeerde het begin van een periode van omzwervingen die Arthur Rimbaud halverwege 1880 min of meer bij toeval maar wel voorgoed in Afrika deden belanden. Hij was al sinds 1875 (toen hij de Rêve voltooide) in literaire zin uitgeschreven, maar de vele brieven vanuit Aden en Harar aan zijn moeder en zuster Isabelle etaleren nog wel degelijk de scherpe, hallucinante pen waarover hij beschikte. Daar, in het toenmalige Djibouti en Abyssinië, werd Rimbaud endelijk un autre. Hij hield zich voortaan verre van kunst en poëzie en vond een bestaan als koopman in velerlei waren: goud, katoen, dierenhuiden, ivoor enzovoorts, maar ook wapens waarmee hij vanaf de kust de verzengend hete en droge binnenlanden in trok. De brieven naar huis zijn vaak uiteenzettingen over zijn handelsinitiatieven en nog vaker klaagzangen over de ellendige situatie waarin hij verkeert, ook al schijnt hij er uiteindelijk in geslaagd te zijn een klein fortuin te vergaren. De werkelijkheid blijft hem intussen bevreemden als een surrealistisch spektakel. Rimbaud wordt in Afrika langzaam gesloopt door het klimaat en het harde werken. Een botziekte, die hem dwingt zich in Marseille een been te laten afzetten, brengt hem in 1891 tegen zijn zin naar Charleville bij zijn moeder, waar hij alleen maar zieker wordt. Zijn wens desondanks terug te keren naar Harar wordt niet meer verwezenlijkt. Zijn zuster Isabella begeleidt hem tenslotte naar Marseille, waar hij op 10 november in een ziekenhuis overlijdt.
