Education Systems and Learners

release date: Aug 16, 2018
Education Systems and Learners
This book explores curricular, teaching and learning practices in schools in England and in higher education institutions, and considers the damaging effects of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) for UK higher education institutions, international comparative assessment systems such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), and broadly, how educational judgements are now made about educational matters. David Scott criticizes the implementation of neo-liberal policies and practices in education systems round the world, management and control system approaches, and empiricist/positivist research agendas. The book offers an account of a new education model, which is directly in opposition to agendas currently supported by the right of the political spectrum. It will be of interest to teachers and students of education, the education research community, practising and trainee teachers, and education policy makers.

Parties and Democracy in France

release date: Jan 01, 2000
Parties and Democracy in France
The Presidency has been the principal political focus of the French Fifth Republic and the new component of French democracy. This book looks at how the Presidency has shaped political parties and party systems, as well as how they have interacted with the new institution. The Presidency has acted as a unifying force, bringing together coalitions of parties to provide a political basis for presidential power, but has also been a divisive factor. Parties draw on longstanding traditions of French political life and the Presidency can provoke destructive rivalry as well as constructive coalition-building.

Design in Airline Travel Posters 1920-1970

release date: Jan 18, 2021
Design in Airline Travel Posters 1920-1970
This book studies design in airline travel posters of the 1920–1970: period. It is both a semiology and a sociocultural cultural history that explores the way advertising posters combine information and fantasy to create seductive images/texts. The book is lavishly illustrated in colour, the images constituting part of the overall argument. The field of poster studies is vast, but it is surprising how little work has been done till date on the fundamental structures – semiotic and semantic – that underpin the visual messages posters produce. Most studies of posters focus either on their history; on specific themes – politics, travel, sport, cinema; or on their status as collectable items. Though such approaches are valid, they hardly account for the specificity of the poster’s appeal or for the complex semiotic and cultural issues poster art raises. This book sets out to tackle these latter issues since they are fundamental both to the deeper significance and to the wider appeal of the poster as a cultural form. In doing so it focuses on the field of airline travel posters which developed precisely in the period of the twentieth century (1920–1970) that coincided with the onset of mass travel.

Always Say Yes

release date: Oct 01, 2014
Always Say Yes
''I was 13 when I decided what I wanted to do in life was travel and have adventures, be of some use to other people, and have a family. Life worked out pretty much as I hoped.'' Born into middle-class poverty in the 1920s, David Scott was on course for a corporate career until his uncle, Father Gerard Tucker, invited him to become part of The Brotherhood of St Laurence. Scott went on to become the director of the Brotherhood turning it into the most significant agency for social welfare in Australia. He also formed Community Aid Abroad (now Oxfam) and played a leading role in galvanising support for the East Timorese people when Indonesia invaded. Always Say Yes follows Scott''s life and accomplishments and celebrates one of our giants of social policy.

Shakespeare and the Book

release date: Jan 01, 2002
Shakespeare and the Book
On those occasions when the Shakespeare first folio, the 1623 first printing in folio format of the collected works of William Shakespeare, is placed on display, it is generally shown in splendid isolation as one of the great treasures of the library. Columbia''s copy, a part of the 1881 bequest of Stephen Whitney Phoenix, is no exception, although over the decades it has been shown to a large number of classes, including recently many sections of Literature Humanities in the Columbia Core Curriculum. In this exhibition, inspired by the publication of David Scott Kastan''s Shakespeare & The Book (Cambridge University Press, September, 2001) the Shakespeare first folio is on display not only with Columbia''s copies of the other three 17th century Shakespeare folios. All four are shown within the context of the 17th century English printed play, along with copies of works known to Shakespeare. This exhibition draws heavily on the splendid collection of four centuries of English and American literature collected by Jack Harris Samuels and bequeathed to the University by his mother, Mollie Harris Samuels, in 1970. This collection is distinguished not only for the titles represented but also by their excellent condition and, in many cases, distinguished provenance.

The Civil Law Tradition

release date: Jan 01, 1994
The Civil Law Tradition
Intended for use in introductory courses in comparative law or civil law systems, this book is the successor edition to John Henry Merryman and David S. Clark, Comparative Law: Western European and Latin American Legal Systems (1978). It is a successor edition rather than a second edition because it reflects the truly fundamental changes that have occurred in the relationships among the world''s major legal systems during the past 16 years. First, the book recognizes the contribution of the civil law tradition to contemporary national systems in East Asia, Japan being the principal example. Second, the enlarged, 16 member-nation European Union, along with Japan and new industrial nations of East Asia and the United States, have become the principal players in world affairs. Third, with the decline of Soviet socialism has come a decline in significance in Soviet law. Fourth, one cannot ignore the increased presence of Latin America in our new multipolar world.
