From the bestselling author of Thirst and Mud, Rocks, Blazes, this compelling memoir chronicles Heather Anderson’s ambitious journey to thru-hike America’s Triple Crown--the Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide Trails--in a single calendar year. Between 2003 and 2017, Anderson hiked more than 20,000 miles, twice completing each of the nation’s three longest trails and setting speed records along the way. But records can be broken--so Anderson set out to accomplish something even more audacious: becoming the first woman to hike what’s known as a Calendar Year Triple Crown. Farther covers Anderson’s gritty and challenging effort across nearly 8,000 miles of backcountry, navigating physical hardship and mental resilience. Juggling logistics and weather, as well as emotional upheaval in her personal relationships, Anderson examines themes of grief, identity, and perseverance with clarity and vulnerability. As months of feral solitude and struggle unfold, Anderson seeks meaning through motion--how walking forward can help us find our way back to ourselves.

"Beautiful and deftly written and intimate and searing in its honesty, Anish’s is a quest to conquer the trail and her own inner darkness." -- Foreword Reviews "Filled with ruminative self-reflection, soaring natural descriptions and delightful accounts of the gracious, life-sustaining ''trail magic'' of hiking culture, Thirst is a testament to human endurance, inspiring to hikers and non-hikers alike." -- Shelf Awareness "A refreshingly candid account of how an average person can harness a steadfast determination to achieve the spectacular." ― Outside Named "50 Best Hiking Books of all Time" by BACKPACKER MAGAZINE By age twenty-five, Heather Anderson had hiked the Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide Trails--a combined distance of nearly eight thousand miles with a vertical gain of more than one million feet. Then, feeling it was time to settle down, Heather retired from long-distance hiking, married, and started a career. But her urge for wilderness was too strong, and she realized that nothing could replace the comfort she found while hiking. Her marriage crumbled. She quit her job. And she walked back into the mountains. In Thirst: 2600 Miles to Home, Heather, whose trail name is "Anish," explores her motivations in returning to the trail--and to her record-setting success on the PCT when she hiked 40-plus miles a day, often walking late into the night by glow of a headlamp, and facing down rattlesnakes, mountain lions, bears, raging rivers, snow, and lightning. She shares her joy in leaving behind a mundane life, and amid the rigors of the trail--the pain, fear, loneliness, and dangers--she discovers the greater rewards of both community and self-fulfillment. She learns that setting records is merely a catalyst, teaching her how to live a life of courage, confidence, and purpose.

"A must-have for anyone who feels called to the woods." -- The Trek Tips based on the authors’ extensive on-the-ground experiences Interest in hiking and long-distance trails continues to boom In Adventure Ready, renowned hikers Katie "Salty" Gerber and Heather "Anish" Anderson take what they’ve learned both on the trail and through teaching their online classes to a new level: preparing long-distance hikers for all the challenges--physical, emotional, and mental--they may encounter while on the trail for weeks or months. This clear and comprehensive guide sets backpackers up for success with detailed information about everything from the basics of gear selection, navigation, safety, and trip planning to nutritional and physical preparation and body resiliency to how to readjust after returning home. Worksheets and checklists make it easy to stay on top of all the planning a long-distance hike requires, while thoughtful prompts to address the "Why" of your adventure help to keep you motivated. Adventure Ready empowers both men and women to create goals, face challenges, and be stronger and smarter on the trail.

Despite her success setting a self-supported Fastest Known Time record on the Pacific Crest Trail in 2013, Heather “Anish” Anderson still had such deep-seated insecurities that she became convinced her feat had been a fluke. So two years later she set out again, this time hiking through mud, rocks, and mountain blazes to crush her constant self-doubt and seek the true source of her strength and purpose. The 2,180 miles of the Appalachian Trail, from Maine to Georgia, did not make it easy. Anderson struggled with its infamous rain, humidity, insects, and steep grades for 54 days. But because she had to fight for every step, she knew when she reached the summit of Springer Mountain, the AT’s southern terminus, that she had fully earned the trail. Of greater value, she learned to love herself and her body, and to feel the depth of her power. Examining emotional scars as well as her relationship with her mother, Anderson’s deeply internal yet highly physical journey in Mud, Rocks, Blazes is an essential story.

Today, there is an increasing permeability between the realms of craft and art occurring in step with an emphasis on the handmade in contemporary art practice and in the widespread interest in all things handcrafted. 'Making Otherwise' presents the work of six Canadian artists who merge the material and conceptual approaches of craft and art: Richard Boulet (Alberta), Ursula Johnson (Nova Scotia), Marc Courtemanche (Quebec), Paul Mathieu (British Columbia), Sarah Maloney (Nova Scotia), and Janet Morton (Ontario). Drawing on their fluency in ceramics, basket weaving, furniture making, stitchery, bronze casting, woodworking, and knitting, these artists think through materials, forms, and ideas to make things differently or otherwise. 00Exhibition: Carleton University Art Gallery, Ottawa (12.05.-04.09.2014) / Mount Saint Vincent University Art Gallery, Halifax (09.10.-30.11.2014) / Cambridge Art Galleries, Cambridge, Canada (01.05.-27.06.2015).
