The Translocator Protein's Role in Central Nervous System Injury and Repair

release date: Jan 01, 2014
The Translocator Protein's Role in Central Nervous System Injury and Repair
The translocator protein (TSPO) has been implicated in numerous diseases and disorders, from cancer to Alzheimer's. Even with its importance in these diseases, the role of the translocator protein is not completely understood. Previous studies have demonstrated that it plays a role in cell activation, development, steroidogenesis, apoptosis, and neuronal behavior. TSPO plays a unique role in the central nervous system. It is a common marker for neuroinjury, and is used as a target in PET scans to identify areas of increased damage. It has also been identified as a marker for astrocyte and microglia activation. To better understand the role of TPSO in the central nervous system, we utilized both a pharmaceutical and molecular knock-out model. The effects of the TPSO ligand Etifoxine was analyzed in the mouse model of multiple sclerosis, to determine how modulation of TSPO contributes to neural injury and repair. We also generated the first ever TSPO knock-out mouse to analyze the role TSPO plays in the central nervous system. We found that TSPO modulation leads to a decrease in injury during experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. It also led to a regenerative effect in response to damage. The TPSO knock-out showed that this effect may be mediated through the astrocyte pathway, as knocking-out TPSO in astrocytes resulted in a decrease in astrogliosis.

The Landing of the Pilgrims

release date: Feb 02, 2011
The Landing of the Pilgrims
Learn how and why the Pilgrims left England to come to America! In England in the early 1600s, everyone was forced to join the Church of England. Young William Bradford and his friends believed they had every right to belong to whichever church they wanted. In the name of religious freedom, they fled to Holland, then sailed to America to start a new life. But the winter was harsh, and before a year passed, half the settlers had died. Yet, through hard work and strong faith, a tough group of Pilgrims did survive. Their belief in freedom of religion became an American ideal that still lives on today. James Daugherty draws on the Pilgrims' own journals to give a fresh and moving account of their life and traditions, their quest for religious freedom, and the founding of one of our nation's most beloved holidays; Thanksgiving.
