European Unity (1968) examines how the European Economic Community and other European international organisations transformed the relations between the countries of Western Europe in political, economic and defence affairs. It describes the postwar moves to European cooperation and unity and the resulting establishment of various organisations. Each of these are examined separately, in terms of its history and achievements. The origins and structure of each organisation and the working methods and techniques devised by them are described, and the reasons for the relative success or failure in their allotted tasks are analysed.

This book is arranged as a six-day Socratic dialogue in play form. It is a humorous explanation of ethical theory and covers all the main ones but in a lucid, uncomplicated way, using plenty of realistic examples. Amongst the theoreticians included are Aristotle, Plato, Aquinas, Kant, Spinoza, Hume, Mill, Moore, Sartre. The content is as follows: • Day 1: the process of good – good defined in a new way as a process of purposeful thoughts or intentions, perceptions, behaviours, emotions, and outcomes • Day 2: parts of the process – each of the parts above explained • Day 3: what is good – ie norms of good; summa bonum and bona as seen by philosophers and by ordinary people • Day 4: morality – social ethics; definitions of ‘ought’, ‘moral imperative’, ‘right and wrong’, ‘obligation’, and ‘duty’; particular examination of Kant’s ideas vis-à-vis our normal behaviour • Day 5: justice – starting from Plato’s Republic, justice as quid pro quo, types of justice, nature of moral responsibility • Day 6: beauty – new definition of beauty and examples of how this works. The book contains original ideas on what good, beauty, morality, virtue, and justice are and original critiques of other theories. Humour and philosophy is a rare duet; humour and ethics even rarer.

Have you ever wondered what the English language would look like if words were spelt correctly? This is a poem about a journey of discovery through the Himalayas, but a poem written phonetically. And it is not just that; it also contains a number of other linguistic innovations. The phonetic system is based on the 29 sounds we actually use in English. The letters ‘c’, ‘q’, and ‘x’ are not used as they repeat existing sounds, notably ‘k’ and ‘s’. Six new letters are introduced: • ø (e in ‘the’) — slashed o (a vowel we use rather a lot) • ð (th in ‘the’) — eth • þ (th in ‘thing’) — thorn • ʧ (ch in ‘chit’) • ʃ (sh in ‘shit’) — esh • ʒ (s in ‘vision’) — ezh. A synthetic linguistic system is used of complex objects arranged as subject/verb/object. Adverbs, pronouns, and prepositions attach to verbs and adjectives and articles to nouns and noun phrases. There are variations of this structure dependent on considerations such as syntax, use of idiom, photographic depictions, and types of conjunctions. In terms of fonts, different ones feature as appropriate to the context, such as a one-off use of Runic, Klingon, and Linear B. Where normal rhyme is used, the line is right-aligned so the rhymes fall under each other, a more logical approach than the standard left alignment. Left alignment is only used where the rhyme is on the first syllable of the sentence, as in a novel terza rima scheme used in one of the chapters. Centering occurs where there is only metre, not rhyme. Various metrical and rhyme schemata feature, both standard and innovative; for example, in terms of innovation, a boustrophedon rhyme scheme and a trochaic final foot in the rerendered Jataka tales. In summary, the poem, albeit both comic and philosophical, is also a linguistic exercise and with an aesthetic aim: an attempt to revive interest in the sound of words and depict what our language actually looks like in an artistic way. The aesthetic is emphasised by the use of colour, different types of linguistic symbols, and illustrations.

The first volume is devoted to Canada, the second to the United States. Lambert landed at Quebec in October 1806. He furnishes a picture of the place of that date, and describes the social manners, dress and political events which were happening, with more than the usual care bestowed by the passing traveller. Much of his historical narrative, however, is not in accordance with fact, having been disproved by authentic document . From Quebec he visited Three Rivers and Montreal, and ascending Lake Champlain entered the United States. Lambert remained at Quebec from November 1806 to August 1807. He came back to Canada in 1808, in order to obtain a passage home. We learn from this work that at this date, both at Quebec and Montreal, the theatre had been established and performances periodically given. His account does not suggest that the acting was of a high order.

The major contribution made by Coastal Forces to the Allied war effort has had surprisingly little coverage in the literature of the Second World War. The complex and important relationship between public expenditure and economic performance has been the subject of numerous econometric studies. But the studies remain inconclusivesome results have shown positive relationships, while others are negative. Thus there is no conventional wisdom backed by statistical evidence on this relationship, nor is there any sort of clear theoretical underpinning that explains how the aggregate of government spending acts on the growth of total output. This book studies the role of public expenditures in a noneconometric way by examining a number of specific instances of these expenditures and their direct effect on economic performance. Specifically, the authors presents scenarios from Botswana, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, and Zambia and ask a series of questions to identify and illuminate the impact of these instances of public expenditure on a number of variables that help measure economic performance. These examples are then used to make generalizations about the relationship between public spending and economic performance.
