Lambert's Travels Through Canada Vol. 2
Somewhat mistitled, Lambert''s Travels through Canada and the United States of North America, in the years 1806, 1807, & 1808, would more properly be titled ""Lambert''s Travels along the East Coast of the United States, ending in Canada."" There is much discussion of agriculture (in particular the Southern plantations), religious observance, and social mores. Lambert''s journey is limited, focusing on South Carolina, New York, and New England. The author also provides biographical sketches and anecdotes about famous Americans. vol. 2 of 2

Allied Coastal Forces of World War II: Volume I

release date: Oct 30, 2018
Allied Coastal Forces of World War II: Volume I
The major contribution made by Coastal Forces to the Allied war effort has had surprisingly little coverage in the literature of the Second World War. Motor torpedo boats, PT boats, motor gunboats, launches and submarine chasers served with distinction throughout the War, and in every theatre. They performed invaluable service as patrol boats, convoy escorts, minelayers and minesweepers, harbour defence vessels, light landing craft, RAF rescue boats and transports for agents and clandestine missions.Allied Coastal Forces, now a recognised classic work and first published in 1990, remains the only publication to deal comprehensively in words, photographs and drawings with the technical detail of all these boats. Design, construction and subsequent development are all covered, and the builders, construction lists, fates and the technical data are given for each type. Separate sections cover armament and equipment, sea-going qualities and habitability. This first volume covers all the designs of the Fairmile Marine Company (including those craft built and equipped for Canada), together with the 72ft Harbour Defence Motor Launch and the US Navy 110ft subchaser. The authors, firmly established as the recognised authorities on small warships, unearthed a remarkable body of information now included in this major work, and their finely detailed drawings, redrawn form original builders plans, offer an unparalleled view of all these remarkable designs. The new editions of their work will be welcomed by naval enthusiasts and modellers alike.

Travels through Canada, and the United States of North America, Volume 2
The first volume is devoted to Canada, the second to the United States. Lambert landed at Quebec in October 1806. He furnishes a picture of the place of that date, and describes the social manners, dress and political events which were happening, with more than the usual care bestowed by the passing traveller. Much of his historical narrative, however, is not in accordance with fact, having been disproved by authentic document . From Quebec he visited Three Rivers and Montreal, and ascending Lake Champlain entered the United States. Lambert remained at Quebec from November 1806 to August 1807. He came back to Canada in 1808, in order to obtain a passage home. We learn from this work that at this date, both at Quebec and Montreal, the theatre had been established and performances periodically given. His account does not suggest that the acting was of a high order.

The Romance of Missionary Heroism: True Stories of the Intrepid Bravery and Stirring Adventures of Missionaries with Uncivilized Man, Wild Beasts and the Forces of Nature in all Parts of the World

The Romance of Missionary Heroism: True Stories of the Intrepid Bravery and Stirring Adventures of Missionaries with Uncivilized Man, Wild Beasts and the Forces of Nature in all Parts of the World
It''s sometimes difficult for those of us steeped in the comforts and ease of today’s modern world to grasp what a life of radical faith can look like. What was ministry like for missionaries living a hundred years ago? What happened "back in the day" when brave missionary pioneers forsook all to follow the calling of God into completely unknown territories? How did God’s faithfulness sustain them? This collection of 24 short stories of missionary adventures from around the globe is a cold shower for a sleeping Church. It reminds us of the hefty price missionaries must be willing to pay to prepare previously untilled soil for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It also drives home this astounding truth: that God provides for those whom He calls — even when things don’t go as planned. Filled with incredible front-line stories, including both victories and defeats, this book will leave you with a newfound respect and gratitude for kingdom forerunners whom God used to open doors to previously unreached people groups. It will also leave you to grapple with a piercing question: How big is your God?

The Comedy of Ethics

release date: Jul 18, 2025
The Comedy of Ethics
This book is arranged as a six-day Socratic dialogue in play form. It is a humorous explanation of ethical theory and covers all the main ones but in a lucid, uncomplicated way, using plenty of realistic examples. Amongst the theoreticians included are Aristotle, Plato, Aquinas, Kant, Spinoza, Hume, Mill, Moore, Sartre. The content is as follows: • Day 1: the process of good – good defined in a new way as a process of purposeful thoughts or intentions, perceptions, behaviours, emotions, and outcomes • Day 2: parts of the process – each of the parts above explained • Day 3: what is good – ie norms of good; summa bonum and bona as seen by philosophers and by ordinary people • Day 4: morality – social ethics; definitions of ‘ought’, ‘moral imperative’, ‘right and wrong’, ‘obligation’, and ‘duty’; particular examination of Kant’s ideas vis-à-vis our normal behaviour • Day 5: justice – starting from Plato’s Republic, justice as quid pro quo, types of justice, nature of moral responsibility • Day 6: beauty – new definition of beauty and examples of how this works. The book contains original ideas on what good, beauty, morality, virtue, and justice are and original critiques of other theories. Humour and philosophy is a rare duet; humour and ethics even rarer.

European Unity

release date: Sep 12, 2025
European Unity
European Unity (1968) examines how the European Economic Community and other European international organisations transformed the relations between the countries of Western Europe in political, economic and defence affairs. It describes the postwar moves to European cooperation and unity and the resulting establishment of various organisations. Each of these are examined separately, in terms of its history and achievements. The origins and structure of each organisation and the working methods and techniques devised by them are described, and the reasons for the relative success or failure in their allotted tasks are analysed.

The Logical World

release date: Jul 16, 2025
The Logical World
Logic seems like a very formal and recondite affair, not something non-logicians should be too concerned with, but there is more to it than linguistic formula. Logic defines the world around us, explains its consistency, is the reason we can trust our perceptions and conceptions. In this book, logic is explained in its three key areas: as part of the non-human world, as part of the world of human reasoning, and as part of our use of language. Along the way, there is an explanation of the basic categories of the world, how the world divides from these categories into objects and relations, the nature of ideas, the role of knowledge and how we derive it from our senses and use it in our reasoning, what truth is, and the role of propositions in expressing truth. The book is short and to the point, modelled in the manner of Wittgenstein’s Tractatus, and indeed something of a reply to that ambitious work. There are plenty of examples to aid understanding and the emphasis is on non-academic language rather than abstruse symbols. It is an original work which contradicts traditional views about the subject, including the real nature of the categories which define our world, what deduction actually does, the difference between knowledge and truth, and the sweeping role of propositions in all type of sentences. You will not look at logic in quite the same way again.

Medicinal Plants

Medicinal Plants
The complex and important relationship between public expenditure and economic performance has been the subject of numerous econometric studies. But the studies remain inconclusivesome results have shown positive relationships, while others are negative. Thus there is no conventional wisdom backed by statistical evidence on this relationship, nor is there any sort of clear theoretical underpinning that explains how the aggregate of government spending acts on the growth of total output. This book studies the role of public expenditures in a noneconometric way by examining a number of specific instances of these expenditures and their direct effect on economic performance. Specifically, the authors presents scenarios from Botswana, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, and Zambia and ask a series of questions to identify and illuminate the impact of these instances of public expenditure on a number of variables that help measure economic performance. These examples are then used to make generalizations about the relationship between public spending and economic performance.
