Italy

release date: Dec 13, 2001
Italy
Italy: A Short History is a concise but comprehensive account of Italian history from the Ice Age to the present day. It is intended for both students of Italian history and culture and the general reader, whether tourist, business-person or traveller, with an interest in Italian affairs. Harry Hearder places the main political developments in Italian history in their economic and social context, and shows how these related to the great moments of artistic and cultural endeavour. Amongst key events, he analyses the growth and decline of the Roman Empire, the remarkable cultural achievements of the Renaissance, Italian unification and the contradictions of the fascist dictatorship of Mussolini. Jonathan Morris brings the work up to the present day with an authoritative but colourful history of the corruption scandals that brought down the post-war Italian political system in the 1990s and the new political forces that have emerged in its place.

Coffee

release date: Oct 15, 2018
Coffee
Most of us can’t make it through morning without our cup (or cups) of joe, and we’re not alone. Coffee is a global beverage: it’s grown commercially on four continents and consumed enthusiastically on all seven—and there is even an Italian espresso machine on the International Space Station. Coffee’s journey has taken it from the forests of Ethiopia to the fincas of Latin America, from Ottoman coffee houses to “Third Wave” cafés, and from the simple coffee pot to the capsule machine. In Coffee: A Global History, Jonathan Morris explains both how the world acquired a taste for this humble bean, and why the beverage tastes so differently throughout the world. Sifting through the grounds of coffee history, Morris discusses the diverse cast of caffeinated characters who drank coffee, why and where they did so, as well as how it was prepared and what it tasted like. He identifies the regions and ways in which coffee has been grown, who worked the farms and who owned them, and how the beans were processed, traded, and transported. Morris also explores the businesses behind coffee—the brokers, roasters, and machine manufacturers—and dissects the geopolitics linking producers to consumers. Written in a style as invigorating as that first cup of Java, and featuring fantastic recipes, images, stories, and surprising facts, Coffee will fascinate foodies, food historians, baristas, and the many people who regard this ancient brew as a staple of modern life.

The Promise

release date: Feb 03, 2009
The Promise
In his work as a priest and commentator for FOX News, Father Jonathan Morris has traveled to the troubled spots of the world, meeting with Muslim youth during the rioting in Paris, sitting down with populists at odds with the Church in Venezuela, and investigating human trafficking in Germany. Now Father Jonathan peels back the layers of questions that arise when someone asks, "Why me?" in response to human suffering. With an accessible voice and calming pastoral guidance, Father Jonathan leads readers through each step of suffering—from doubt and anger to healing and acceptance. The Promise comprises three parts, each addressing a step in the process of healing. Part 1, "God on Trial," speaks to doubts and anger that arise when we suffer and poses tough questions such as "Does God even care?" and "Why should we trust a God who allows innocent suffering?" Part 2 takes the reader on a journey of finding emotional and spiritual healing from suffering. In part 3 Father Jonathan introduces the five "Principles for Freedom-Living." From living your personal vocation to a step-by-step guide for sketching a plan for your spiritual life, the freedom principles are practical and easily applied to everyday life. Together these five principles have the power to transform what would otherwise be useless suffering into a means of great sanctification and personal fulfillment. While pulling back the layers of philosophy and theology that surround human suffering, Father Jonathan offers not only a deeply spiritual answer but also a practical one to this most fundamental of human questions: Why do we suffer? The Promise not only addresses how to understand and live with suffering, but also poses the toughest question regarding our relationship to God: Why do we suffer under a benevolent God? Father Jonathan delves into how we can heal from the spiritual, emotional, and even physical scars left behind by suffering. The Promise offers five principles for living a free life, or a life free of the fear that God is not there for us, and offers comfort and hope to those experiencing hard times.

Light in the Darkness

Light in the Darkness
Fr. Jonathan Morris Calls Us to Be the Light of the World In 1945, Father James Keller saw a world at war, the beginnings of the cold war, and divisions at home. He was a man who believed that against all odds one person could make a difference - so he started a grass-roots movement called The Christophers - literally "Christbearers" - in the belief that each individual has a role in bringing hope and change to a troubled world. And the response was staggering. The world was hungry for the message, and embraced Fr. Keller''s motto: "IT IS BETTER TO LIGHT ONE CANDLE THAN TO CURSE THE DARKNESS." In 2014, the world is just as dangerous and chaotic, and in many ways far more insidious than in Fr. Keller''s day. No one knows the extent of this crisis better than Father Jonathan Morris, popular author and FOX news analyst. Here, in his new book Light in the Darkness, Fr. Johnathan brings you eight of the core teachings of Fr. Keller, along with his own insights, showing us how they relate to us today. A Sense of Purpose The Power of Love Sharing the Faith The Witness of Life Pray Always Becoming Like Christ Living as a Christian Trusting God Fr. Jonathan believes that now is the time for each of us to realize our own roles, and become "Christophers" in the world we live in today.

Buddhist Hagiography in Early Japan

release date: Oct 21, 2004
Buddhist Hagiography in Early Japan
Hagiographies or idealized biographies which recount the lives of saints, bodhisattvas and other charismatic figures have been the meeting place for myth and experience. In medieval Europe, the ''lives of saints'' were read during liturgical celebrations and the texts themselves were treated as sacred objects. In Japan, it was believed that those who read the biographies of lofty monks would acquire merit. Since hagiographies were written or compiled by ''believers'', the line between fantasy and reality was often obscured. This study of the bodhisattva Gyoki - regarded as the monk who started the largest social welfare movement in Japan - illustrates how Japanese Buddhist hagiographers chose to regard a single monk''s charitable activities as a miraculous achievement that shaped the course of Japanese history.

Managing in the Modern Corporation

release date: Oct 22, 2009
Managing in the Modern Corporation
In recent years, widespread organisational change in large corporations has almost invariably led to work intensification and increased stress for managers. Managing in the Modern Corporation explains how and why large companies have changed their organisational structures and philosophies, focusing in particular on how these changes affect the careers of middle managers. Based on in-depth interviews with over two hundred middle and senior managers working in large corporations in the USA, UK and Japan, it shows how the working lives of managers have been subjected to major disruption, involving work intensification and reduced opportunities for career progression. Furthermore, it argues that such widespread overwork and poor treatment of highly skilled and highly motivated staff has created a major international problem that must be addressed. The book presents a range of solutions to this important problem, suggesting that there are possibilities for saner, less brutal organisational environments.

The Political Economy of Shopkeeping in Milan, 1886-1922

release date: May 09, 2002
The Political Economy of Shopkeeping in Milan, 1886-1922
From the mid-1880s a shopkeeper movement developed in Milan, centred around a shopkeeper newspaper, a federation of shopkeeper trade associations, and a shopkeeper bank. In 1904 shopkeeper representatives initiated a sequence of events that led to the fall of the first radical-socialist administration within the city. The author explains these events with reference to the business of shopkeeping itself. He analyses the trades, techniques, tax structure and topography of the Milanese retail sector, and traces the history of the contest between shops and cooperatives and the shopkeeper''s changing relationship with his employees and with his clientele. The final chapter confronts the crucial question of why the Milanese shopkeepers were to be found on the political right in the years leading up to the Fascist takeover. This is the first book to deal with any aspect of the Italian petite bourgeoisie.

Developing Public Service Leaders

release date: Oct 17, 2022
Developing Public Service Leaders
Developing Public Service Leaders examines why and how governments and representative bodies in public service organizations have mounted major interventions over the last two decades to develop senior staff as leaders. A critical explanation is developed of the foundational contribution made by national leadership development interventions in the 2000s to the emergence, proliferation, and normalization of leadership development provision. Through carrying out qualitative research in England, the authors investigate the national leadership development interventions for school education, healthcare, and higher education. Whilst also looking at the contemporary legacy of these interventions within a global scale, examining the growing international movement and comparing interventions across the world. The book looks at new ways to approach leadership development, adopting a novel perspective on leadership as a metaphorical concept and coining the concept of ''leaderism'', and exploring how although senior staff may be widely acculturated as leaders, they may not necessarily be committed to acting as government change agents. Leadership development makes a diffuse contribution towards the ongoing neoliberalization of public services. Developing Public Service Leaders is a comprehensive and essential read for a researcher or policymaker striving for an in-depth understanding of the field and its ramifications.

To What Extent Does the Use of Swiss German and Attitudes Towards This Variety Suggest That Dialect Is Replacing Standard in Diglossic Switzerland

release date: May 08, 2010
To What Extent Does the Use of Swiss German and Attitudes Towards This Variety Suggest That Dialect Is Replacing Standard in Diglossic Switzerland
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject German Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1, University of Manchester, language: English, abstract: Ferguson''s initial definition of diglossia describes the use of ''two language varieties [that] exist side by side throughout the community, each having a definite role to play'' (1959, repr. 1972: 232). The relationship between the Swiss dialects (which will be referred to from hereon as SG) and Swiss Standard German (HG) has been characterized as ''medial diglossia'', based on the HG for writing and SG for speaking dichotomy (see EDI 1989b: 101). As Rash comments, ''the term "functional diglossia" is perhaps preferable, as it fits the situation whereby SG and HG are each allocated certain functions (1998: 50). Traditionally, the functions (or domains) of HG have been that of a Schriftsprache, acquired through the education system but also produced orally on formal occasions, in communication with non-SG speakers and in the media. SG has no ''soziolektale Wertung'' (Linke, Nussbaumer & Portmann 2004: 347) and is therefore employed as an informal spoken variety by all members of the speech community. The following

The Golden Rule
The New York Times bestselling author of The Way of Serenity and Fox News analyst lays out the enduring wisdom and practicality of Jesus’ invitation to treat others as we would like to be treated. "Do unto others as you would have them do to you." As children, we are taught the Golden Rule, a simple yet timeless moral lesson that reminds us of our responsibility to others and to ourselves. Yet too many of us have forgotten its message. Harried, tired, stressed, we lash out at perceived grievances, injustices, and slights, forgetting to treat others with the consideration and respect we seek ourselves. In this thoughtful, positive, and loving book that speaks to our times, New York Times bestselling author and Fox News contributor Father Jonathan Morris offers meditations that encourage us to make the Golden Rule central to our daily lives. As he did for the Serenity Prayer in The Way of Serenity, Father Morris now does for this ethical rubric, revealing the power this simple wisdom holds to transform our lives and our world. Morris examines the Golden Rule through a contemporary lens to provide a modern re-reading of this classic ethical lesson and its relevance today. One of the most trusted Catholic voices, he encourages readers to incorporate the substantial contributions Jesus made to the maxim to help them center their lives and spiritual practice around kindness, compassion, and patience—virtues that can make us happier and ultimately more productive in our lives. Nurturing and uplifting, The Golden Rule reminds us that we are each but one of all God’s children in the world—unique beings intrinsically connected to each other, and the entirety of humanity.
