Wayfarer is an anthology of twelve short stories and three poems. I used the title of Wayfarer because the stories came to me while traveling to different places in the world. For example, The India Ring came to me while my wife and I were watching a Frenchman doing a pantomime in an empty swimming pool in Agra, India. The Wager came to me while watching cock fights in Aguascalientes, Mexico. And The youngest Hero came to me as a dream. One story was the experience of a friend''s experience In Vietnam when he was saved by playing a battle-worn piano in an old French Mission. What is interesting to me is that these stories came to me unprompted from my surroundings and I have no idea why they came or from where.

Kathryn Stromberg, a San Francisco hooker, witnesses a double murder and run looking for safety. Seeing a truck pulling a stock trailer she climbs into the cab surprising a cowboy from Utah. As they discuss her situation, he offers his ranch to hide at until it is safe. However, they don''t get along and she eventually gets out in the middle of no where and he drives off. At a cafe in Salina, they meet again but she doesn''t go with him. She eventually, talks the waitress talks her into going to his ranch because he is a famous Rode star and is reported to have a lot of money. This begins a tumultuous relationship which leads to them falling for each other. However, her past catches up with her in a dramatic conclusion.

Civic, social, and community service organizations are historically volunteer-led and are unique in their reliance on volunteers leading other volunteers at all levels. Volunteer leaders operate with limited authority and lead volunteers who may not see themselves as followers. Volunteer leader behavior may reflect these unique characteristics. This paper discusses differences between volunteer leader behavior and paid leader behavior as reported by 75 volunteer leaders in a large multi-level community service organization. Leadership behavior was measured by asking the volunteer leaders to report the degree to which they engaged in each of the five practices of exemplary leadership using the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) - Self instrument. These data were compared to normative LPI data for paid leaders. A statistically significant difference was found for one of the five practices of exemplary leadership. This paper discusses the findings, presents possible conclusions, and suggests implications for the practice of volunteer leadership.
