A combination of misfortunes prevented Lucius Shepard from breaking out into the literary world beyond SF and his elevation to the Pantheon of writers remains always a breath and a wish away. In the meantime, here are four tales of people hoping to survive the daily trauma of their lives. All caught in a world of crows and silences and trying to make the best of it.

Son cœur avait cessé de battre, son souffle s’était tu, mais son esprit continuait d’écumer, d’émettre les sinistres vibrations qui asservissaient tous ceux qui restaient trop longtemps dans son champ d’influence.

During his annual solo spring holiday in Teocinte, maritally disgruntled numismatist George finds the scale of a young dragon. When he starts cleaning the scale he''s briefly on a hot, grassy plain. When he does it again, pressing harder, he and the young hooker "Sylvia" are both transported, then chased by a 25-foot dragon. The dragon Griaule has gathered them and some 60 others to witness something.
