Few studies have documented the strategies that are used to recruit African American men into clinical trials. This study reports on the strategies used to recruit men into a 5-month exercise training trial. Three different broad strategies were used to recruit men into the study, including earned media (e.g., email, TV), paid media (e.g., radio, newspaper), and community outreach (e.g., churches, community events). The recruitment strategies were implemented by a single recruiter with the support of four study spokespersons. There were 677 men who were phone screened and 113 who were randomized into the study. Community outreach efforts resulted in the largest number of men who were both phone screened and randomized (~80%). Paid media was the strategy that resulted in the fewest phone screens per randomization (efficiency). Although labor intensive and time consuming, community outreach efforts was the most effective strategy to recruit African American men into a clinical trial.

In randomized controlled trials, high levels of adherence and compliance are necessary to demonstrate the positive impact of exercise on health outcomes. The overarching aim of intervention implementation is to determine the feasibility of utilizing such a program as the mode of delivery for lifestyle change. Feasibility and success can be measured by compliance (the quantity of exercise sessions attended compared with prescribed) and adherence (the quantity of exercise dose completed compared with the total prescribed). Barriers to participation such as motivation, goal achievement, and satisfaction can negatively affect engagement and participation. Monitoring adherence throughout the study intervention is important to address barriers and problems. To maximize retention in the intervention for HART-D, we employed a variety of strategies including facilitating access to the center, maximizing staff availability, providing participants tangible support and emotional support, and providing appropriate information to participants. When unpreventable problems arise, various strategies were utilized to keep a participant engaged, including but not limited to more frequent contact, face-to-face counseling, alternative team member requested to build rapport, or a consultation with behaviorist or psychologist. In addition, essential aspects of maximizing participation and promoting retention include carefully screening and assessing barriers to adherence and retention prior to randomization, carefully monitoring adherence problems, trying to identify these problems early before participants refuse further study contact, and applying specific strategies to address these problems. High levels of adherence to a study intervention are important to address the research question and approve or disprove the hypothesis.

This study presents an attempt to reduce the losses produced by the purge flow in a turbine stage by incorporating circumferential platform contouring. Two contours are proposed and compared against a baseline at different levels of swirl. The computational simulations were performed using a RANS three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics code with the Shear Stress Transport turbulence model. The results of steady simulations demonstrate that for the first contour, when the flow is swirled to 50% of the rim speed, the purge flow exits the cavity with less cross flow. This in turn reduces the strength of the passage vortex. However, at swirl extremes of 0% and 100% the baseline has the best performance. The results show that a carefully designed platform has the potential to reduce losses when the operating condition is in the proximity of 50% swirl.
