The Good Bad Mother

release date: Dec 12, 2023
The Good Bad Mother
A fascinating and thought-provoking book, "The Good Bad Mother," explores the complicated responsibilities and expectations that mothers in contemporary society must live up to. The author questions the simplistic ideas of "good" and "bad" parenting in this perceptive examination of motherhood, illuminating the complex experiences, feelings, and choices that mold a mother''s path. This book presents a surprisingly compassionate and honest assessment of the difficulties faced by mothers in the contemporary world, drawing on first-hand accounts, in-depth research, and interviews with moms from a range of backgrounds. To handle the often-conflicting demands of parenthood, the author urges moms to embrace their own talents, imperfections, and personal values rather than succumbing to society expectations or stereotypes. The Good Bad Mother dispels common misconceptions about motherhood and poses pertinent concerns. It talks on how moms are often judged by society, pressured to meet impossible ideals of perfection, and the shame that comes with having to make tough choices. With a thoughtful examination of subjects including discipline, self-care, work-life balance, and the challenging balancing act of parenting, this book offers mothers direction and encouragement to get over self-doubt and discover their own true path. The fundamental argument made by "The Good Bad Mother" is that there isn''t just one "right" way to be a mother. Rather, it highlights the value of resilience, self-compassion, and the capacity to adjust to the always shifting dynamics of parenthood. The book is a helpful resource for mothers who want to make sense of their own issues, negotiate the complex web of expectations, and provide themselves and their kids a meaningful and fulfilling experience. It offers helpful guidance, relevant anecdotes, and uplifting truths. This book is for everyone who wants to learn about the various viewpoints that define what it means to be a mother and the intricacies of contemporary parenthood-not just mothers. Whether you are a seasoned parent, a first-time mother, or just interested in learning more about the nuances of motherhood, "The Good Bad Mother" provides insightful advice, empathy, and understanding that will connect with readers and give them a sense of empowerment and support.

Why Does Everyone Steal My Lighter?

release date: Oct 03, 2023
Why Does Everyone Steal My Lighter?
Michael Johnston''s unruly and hysterical novel follows a cast of characters from the ''90s rock band, Texas Flip: their story told through various concerts during the band''s two-plus-decade career, each leap in time connected by a fine thread of rushed quarter notes, broken strings, and free drink tickets. Amongst them is Zach Long, guitarist and overseer of their dogged pursuit of musical excellence. Luke Strange, lead singer and bass player whose sex addiction has ruined more than one performance. A manager, Todd Shift, clutching at the group''s frayed coattails for as long as their ride will last.Collected, these musicians deliver the playbook of what life in a band used to be like--navigating a world without GPS, social media, or legal marijuana, with a thirst for only the next gig or riff, with amusement and passion and simplicity. Regarded as an early classic, Why Does Everyone Steal My Lighter? is right away comical and entertaining, wholly funny and justly memorable.

The Middle English Book

The Middle English Book
The Middle English Book analyzes 202 literary manuscripts from late medieval England (1350-1500) and argues that most readers looked to scribes in their immediate vicinity to acquire copies of literature. It examines various forms of writing practiced by scribes throughout the late medieval English countryside and shows that the production of documents underscored the wide availability of literary copying. As a result, when a reader acquired a manuscript, they were most often tapping into local networks of document production.

What New Parent Don't Know

release date: Dec 14, 2022
What New Parent Don't Know
Happy, sad, annoyed, ecstatic, incensed, and disappointed. Calm. These are just a handful of the many emotions that influence how we live our lives every day. Our conduct is influenced by our emotions, which are fundamental to the human experience. We all go through a spectrum of emotions, and they have a significant impact on our life from birth. We exhibit a basic set of emotions, such as joy, sorrow, anger, surprise, and disgust, beginning in infancy. We continue to feel these feelings throughout infancy and adulthood, becoming more sophisticated and nuanced as we mature, such as with shame, hope, and guilt. To determine a young kid''s likes, dislikes, desires, and needs, parents and caregivers may learn to read their emotional signs. If they are perceptive and receptive to these cues, they can help their child control their emotions. For instance, a parent may feed and rock a wailing baby to quiet it down, or they may cuddle and speak calmly to a toddler to calm him down. This process of controlling a child''s emotions is known as external regulations. As early childhood develops, children start to transition from depending only on external regulation (such as a caregiver hugging them) to acquiring their internal emotion management skills (taking a deep breath to calm themselves down on their own). The word "emotion regulation" refers to both internal and external mechanisms that enable a person to keep track of, assess, and adjust their emotional responses. Research demonstrates that children who have strong emotion regulation skills are more likely to have positive relationships with peers, perform better academically in the short and long-term, and transition into later grades more smoothly. As a result, developing emotion regulation (and in particular, internal regulation ability) is an important milestone for children. the author Michael Johnston, has coach many parents in the upbringing of their children. In this book he has shows how parental emotion can effect the child.. to know more get a copy of this book.

Origin of Lgbt

Origin of Lgbt
The majority of historians agree that there is evidence of homosexual behavior and same-sex relationships in every society that has been studied, regardless of whether such partnerships were tolerated or outlawed. Lesbian, homosexual, bisexual, and transgender social movements: a short history/Bonnie J. Morris, PhD One shooter killed several people at the well-known gay dance club Pulse in Orlando on June 12, 2016. The deadliest mass shooting in American history, this hate crime left at least 49 people dead and another 50 wounded. It happened throughout the weekend that was LGBT Pride weekend in American cities and towns. The President of the United States reached out to express his outrage and concern and received an immediate, compassionate response from mayors, police, and FBI officials, as well as local and national politicians. This shows the enormous shift in public opinion in favor of acceptance and support for the LGBT community. Even though the LGBT community and people continue to be the subject of hate crimes and retaliation on a global scale, activists'' and supporters'' tireless efforts have allowed us to reach a time where those who commit acts of violence rather than their victims are decried as mentally ill. Regulation of Beta-catenin Degradation by the Adenomatous Polyposis Coli Protein

release date: Jan 01, 2022
Regulation of Beta-catenin Degradation by the Adenomatous Polyposis Coli Protein
The Wnt/Beta-catenin pathway controls the differentiation and growth of tissues by regulating the stability of the transcription factor Beta-catenin. In the absence of a Wnt growth factor, Beta-catenin is destroyed in a multiprotein complex that contains the protein adenomatous polyposis coli (APC). Over two-thirds of colorectal cancers bear mutations in APC, which leads to inappropriate stabilization of Beta-catenin. Despite its importance, the precise role of APC in Beta-catenin destruction has not been defined. Here I present studies showing the identification of cyclin-dependent kinases as critical for APC''s interactions with the Beta-catenin destruction complex. Phosphorylated APC binds directly to the ubiquitin E3 ligase Beta-TrCP and facilitates ubiquitination of Beta-catenin, which is required for its destruction. These findings establish a new link between the cell division cycle and the Wnt growth factor pathway.

Silence of the Soleri

release date: Feb 16, 2021
Silence of the Soleri
Silence of the Soleri is the action-packed sequel to the epic fantasy novel Lev Grossman calls "bloody and utterly epic." Solus celebrates the Opening of the Mundus, a two-day holiday for the dead, but the city of the Soleri is hardly in need of diversion. A legion of traitors, led by a former captain of the Soleri military, rallies at the capital’s ancient walls. And inside those fortifications, trapped by circumstance, a second army fights for its very existence. In a world inspired by ancient Egyptian history and King Lear, this follow-up to Michael Johnston''s Soleri, finds Solus besieged from within as well as without and the Hark-Wadi family is stuck at the heart of the conflict. The Conundrum of Corruption

release date: Dec 30, 2020
The Conundrum of Corruption
This book argues that it is time to step back and reassess the anti-corruption movement, which despite its many opportunities and great resources has ended up with a track record that is indifferent at best. Drawing on many years of experience and research, the authors critique many of the major strategies and tactics employed by anti-corruption actors, arguing that they have made the mistake of holding on to problematical assumptions, ideas, and strategies, rather than addressing the power imbalances that enable and sustain corruption. The book argues that progress against corruption is still possible but requires a focus on justice and fairness, considerable tolerance for political contention, and a willingness to stick with the reform cause over a very long process of thoroughgoing, sometimes discontinuous political change. Ultimately, the purpose of the book is not to tell people that they are doing things all wrong. Instead, the authors present new ways of thinking about familiar dilemmas of corruption, politics, contention, and reform. These valuable insights from two of the top thinkers in the field will be useful for policymakers, reform groups, grant-awarding bodies, academic researchers, NGO officers, and students.

Weathering Early Modern Germany

release date: Jan 01, 2019
Weathering Early Modern Germany
This dissertation explores common ideas about the weather throughout German-speaking lands during the long sixteenth-century (ca. 1480-1620). Weather offers a particularly revealing window into society because of its ubiquity. The weather touched everyone''s daily life and was significant enough to also warrant the creation of a broad body of sources that preserve a record of contemporary perspectives on the subject. In particular, this study examines the interplay between naturalistic and theological outlooks on the weather. Part I of the dissertation shows that Aristotelian naturalism permeated society with the aid of vernacular meteorological publications including annual practicas and weather books. Part II traces how naturalistic understandings of weather shaped the cultural context in which the first generations of Lutheran theologians and pastors attempted to promote a theological significance of the weather. An affirmation of God''s sovereignty over natural secondary causes of the weather created space for naturalistic explanations in Christian society, but did not prevent tensions from arising as well, especially in the aftermath of notable weather-related events. Lutheran pastors, including Martin Luther himself, had concern that natural knowledge of the weather would conceal the hand of God. The popular naturalism at the root of their concern is detailed throughout this study from multiple vantage points. The very possibility of popular naturalism in sixteenth-century Germany is one of the innovative historiographical contributions of the dissertation. I argue that common men and women, along with elites, shared a basic understanding of the natural workings behind the weather within an Aristotelian cosmological outlook. That naturalistic perspective--and a sense of why it was compatible with Christian doctrine--was established by the late fifteenth century and had great continuity through the early decades of the seventeenth century. Such continuity over time and the harmony of a shared knowledge of the weather throughout society offer illuminating cultural perspectives for re-examining the impact of the Protestant Reformation and the Little Ice Age in the context of the sixteenth century. Finally, the study concludes with a reflection on modernization narratives and suggests why some of the features of society highlighted in this study have been largely overlooked. Political Corruption

release date: Sep 29, 2017
Political Corruption
Corruption is once again high on the international policy agenda as a result of globalization, the spread of democracy, and major scandals and reform initiatives. But the concept itself has been a focus for social scientists for many years, and new findings and data take on richer meanings when viewed in the context of long-term developments and enduring conceptual debates. This compendium, a much-enriched version of a work that has been a standard reference in the field since 1970, offers concepts, cases, and fresh evidence for comparative analysis.Building on a nucleus of classic studies laying out the nature and development of the concept of corruption, the book also incorporates recent work on economic, cultural, and linguistic dimensions of the problem, as well as critical analyses of several approaches to reform. While many authors are political scientists, work by historians, economists, and sociologists are strongly represented. Two-thirds of the nearly fifty articles are based either on studies especially written or translated for this volume, or on selected journal literature published in the 1990s. The tendency to treat corruption as merely a synonym for bribery is illuminated by analyses of the diverse terminology and linguistic techniques that help distinguish corruption problems in the major languages. Recent attempts to measure corruption, and to analyze its causes and effects quantitatively are also critically examined. New contributions emphasize especially: corruption phenomena in Asia and Africa; contrasts among region and regime types; comparing U.S. state corruption incidence; European Party finance and corruption; assessments of international corruption rating project; analyses of international corruption control treaties; unintended consequences of anti-corruption efforts. Cumulatively, the book combines description richness, analytical thrust, conceptual awareness, and contextual articulation.

Soleri

Soleri
"The ruling family of the Soleri Empire has been in power longer than even the calendars that stretch back 2,826 years. Those records tell a history of conquest and domination by a people descended from gods, older than anything in the known world. No living person has seen them for centuries, yet their grip on their four subjugate kingdoms remains tighter than ever. On the day of the annual eclipse, the Harkan king, Arko-Hark Wadi, sets off on a hunt and shirks his duty rather than bow to the emperor. Ren, his son and heir, is a prisoner in the capital, while his daughters struggle against their own chains. Merit, the eldest, has found a way to stand against imperial law and marry the man she desires, but needs her sister''s help, and Kepi has her own ideas. Meanwhile, Sarra Amunet, Mother Priestess of the sun god''s cult, holds the keys to the end of an empire and a past betrayal that could shatter her family."--Amazon.com.

H-Bombs and Hula Girls
H-Bombs and Hula Girls tells the extraordinary tale of ten bright and cheerful young British midshipmen who were part of Operation Grapple, the top secret thermonuclear weapon tests at Christmas Island in 1957, the first successful test of a British nuclear weapon. Evoking the Cold War atmosphere of Britain in the 1950s as it raced to secure its place among the world''s thermonuclear powers, H-Bombs and Hula Girls follows these men on their remarkable journey. Their trip begins on the aircraft carrier HMS Warrior. On it, they sail through an Atlantic hurricane, squeeze through the Panama Canal, and then head to Easter Island, where they arewitness to three megaton H-bomb explosions. Afterward, they tour Hawaii and the South Pacific and around the coast of South America, serving as goodwill ambassadors. Compiled by crewmember Michael Johnston from journals, letters, and contemporary records, and with a foreword by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, H-Bombs and Hula Girls concludes with a surprising revelation that Operation Grapple may not have been quite what it seemed.

Romance and the Gentry in Late Medieval England

release date: Jun 19, 2014
Romance and the Gentry in Late Medieval England
Romance and the Gentry in Late Medieval England offers a new history of Middle English romance, the most popular genre of secular literature in the English Middle Ages. Michael Johnston argues that many of the romances composed in England from 1350-1500 arose in response to the specific socio-economic concerns of the gentry, the class of English landowners who lacked titles of nobility and hence occupied the lower rungs of the aristocracy. The end of the fourteenth century in England witnessed power devolving to the gentry, who became one of the dominant political and economic forces in provincial society. As Johnston demonstrates, this social change also affected England''s literary culture, particularly the composition and readership of romance. Romance and the Gentry in Late Medieval England identifies a series of new topoi in Middle English that responded to the gentry''s economic interests. But beyond social history and literary criticism, it also speaks to manuscript studies, showing that most of the codices of the "gentry romances" were produced by those in the immediate employ of the gentry. By bringing together literary criticism and manuscript studies, this book speaks to two scholarly communities often insulated from one another: it invites manuscript scholars to pay closer attention to the cultural resonances of the texts within medieval codices; simultaneously, it encourages literary scholars to be more attentive to the cultural resonances of surviving medieval codices.
