Maidens in the Vale

release date: Apr 28, 2023
Maidens in the Vale
The Master Submariner has finally surfaced. Patrick Robinson, who wrote a dazzling series of best sellers about submarine warfare (guided by ex-Royal Navy Underwater Chief and Falklands War Battle Group Commander, Admiral Sir Sandy Woodward) has written his first book in five years, Maidens In The Vale. It''s a page-turning thriller about revenge, murder on an international scale, posing the electrifying modern question - can a young woman be so shockingly abused, that any action she subsequently takes is justified? She''s beautiful, young, expensively educated in England, although Russian by birth and heritage. But her uncle, her mum''s brother, is an ex-KGB assassin. He''s a ''diplomat'' now, based in London. He and his niece make a fire-proof and vengeful combination - driving international Police Forces almost crazy with frustration. Robinson''s areas of some expertise include horseracing, boxing, rowing, Special Forces, and military thrillers, including residents of the Lubyanka, Uncle Rudy''s home base in Moscow. He also knows a thing or two about London''s aristocracy (he was once a much-feared writer on the legendary William Hickey Society Column, Daily Express), It''s all woven into this complex story, and it''s marginally held in place by the most unlikely romance - when the Scotland Yard Superintendent is utterly captivated by his possible prime suspect. Meanwhile, his own mother, the daughter of a Scottish Duke, nearly steals the show, as a droll and irreverent matriarch, like Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey. The book will keep you guessing to the very last page, as it deals with a devastating High Court ''crime'' which dare not speak its name.

The Lion of Sabray

release date: Nov 08, 2016
The Lion of Sabray
Patrick Robinson, coauthor of the #1 New York Times bestseller Lone Survivor and “preeminent writer of modern naval fiction” (The Florida Times Union) shares the gripping untold story of Mohammed Gulab, the Afghani warrior who defied the Taliban and saved the life of American hero and Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell. Bestselling author Patrick Robinson helped Marcus Luttrell bring his harrowing story of survival to the page and the big screen with Lone Survivor. But the Afghani man who saved his life was always shrouded in mystery. Now, with The Lion of Sabray, Robinson reveals the amazing backstory of Mohammed Gulab—the brave man who forever changed the course of life for his Afghani family, his village, and himself when he discovered Luttrell badly injured and barely conscious on a mountainside in the Hindu Kush just hours after the firefight that killed the rest of Luttrell’s team. Operating under the 2,000-year-old principles of Pashtunwali—the tribal honor code that guided his life—Gulab refused to turn Luttrell over to the Taliban forces that were hunting him, believing it was his obligation to protect and care for the American soldier. Because Gulab was a celebrated Mujahedeen field commander and machine-gunner who beat back the Soviets as a teenager, the Taliban were wary enough that they didn’t simply storm the village and take Luttrell, which gave Gulab time to orchestrate his rescue. In addition to Gulab’s brave story, The Lion of Sabray cinematically reveals previously unknown details of Luttrell’s rescue by American forces—which were only recently declassified—and sheds light on the ramifications for Gulab, his family, and his community. Going beyond both the book and the movie versions of Lone Survivor, The Lion of Sabray is a must-read for anyone who wants to know more about the brave man who helped the Lone Survivor make it home.

The Career of Cardinal Giovanni Morone (1509–1580)

release date: Jul 28, 2013
The Career of Cardinal Giovanni Morone (1509–1580)
Cardinal Giovanni Morone (1509–80) remains one of the most intriguing characters in the history of the sixteenth century Catholic Church – with neither his contemporaries nor subsequent scholars being able to agree on his motivations, theology or his legacy. Appointed Bishop of Modena in 1529 and created Cardinal in 1542 by Pope Paul III, his glittering career appeared to be in ruins following his arrest in 1557 on charges of heresy. Yet, despite spending more than two years imprisoned in Castel Sant'' Angelo, he managed to resurrect his career and in 1563 was appointed principal legate to the Council of Trent, whereupon he resolved the difficulties besetting the council, which had brought it to a virtual standstill, and guided it to a successful conclusion. Concentrating largely – but by no means exclusively – upon the period of the pontificate of Pius IV (1559–65) and an evaluation of Morone''s role as presiding legate at the Council of Trent, this book tackles a number of issues that have exercised scholars. How does Morone''s activity at Trent in 1563 now look in the light of the information available in connection with his processo? What was the result of the wider activity of Morone and the spirituali during Pius'' pontificate? How did Morone''s career progress after Trent, with regards his actions as a diocesan in the immediate post-conciliar situation and his renewed difficulties in the pontificate of Pius V? Through a re-reading of important archival material and a re-examination of the wealth of recently published primary sources, this study revisits these key questions, and analyses the fluctuating fortunes of Morone''s career as bishop, diplomat, heretic and cardinal legate.

The Delta Solution
The Delta Solution is an action-packed novel dealing with the Somali pirates operating off the southerly reaches of the lawless East African republic on the Indian Ocean. For the past three years, these heavily armed tribal brigands have been capturing and holding for ransom massive cargo ships, especially oil tankers, and violently demanding millions of dollars for their return. Pirating out of the tiny Somalian village of Haradheere has become a very lucrative, dangerous business, so much so that the village has its own Stock Exchange with a reputed $78 million cash, all in crisp $100 bills, in the town vault. And each time an owner pays big for the return of their ship, the pirates immediately do it again, enraging the Pentagon more and more by the day. That is, until the "Somali Marines" make a big mistake, seizing at gun point two United States ships and demanding a $15 million ransom for their return. Hero Mack Bedford, previously encountered in Diamondhead and Intercept, is deployed to SEAL Team 10 to form The Delta Platoon. His objective: obliterate the Somali Marines in the middle of the Indian Ocean, at all costs, once and for all.

A Colossal Failure of Common Sense

release date: Oct 12, 2010
A Colossal Failure of Common Sense
One of the biggest questions of the financial crisis has not been answered until now: What happened at Lehman Brothers and why was it allowed to fail, with aftershocks that rocked the global economy? In this news-making, often astonishing book, a former Lehman Brothers Vice President gives us the straight answers—right from the belly of the beast. In A Colossal Failure of Common Sense, Larry McDonald, a Wall Street insider, reveals, the culture and unspoken rules of the game like no book has ever done. The book is couched in the very human story of Larry McDonald’s Horatio Alger-like rise from a Massachusetts “gateway to nowhere” housing project to the New York headquarters of Lehman Brothers, home of one of the world’s toughest trading floors. We get a close-up view of the participants in the Lehman collapse, especially those who saw it coming with a helpless, angry certainty. We meet the Brahmins at the top, whose reckless, pedal-to-the-floor addiction to growth finally demolished the nation’ s oldest investment bank. The Wall Street we encounter here is a ruthless place, where brilliance, arrogance, ambition, greed, capacity for relentless toil, and other human traits combine in a potent mix that sometimes fuels prosperity but occasionally destroys it. The full significance of the dissolution of Lehman Brothers remains to be measured. But this much is certain: it was a devastating blow to America’s—and the world’s—financial system. And it need not have happened. This is the story of why it did.

Improving Water Quality in Lower Fox River Watersheds Through Increased Understanding of Biophysical and Human Dimensions
Green Bay is a Lake Michigan resource of national significance that is severely impacted by phosphorus and sediment export from the Lower Fox River Basin. This project will provide an important opportunity to build upon and leverage past work related to the delivery of phosphorus and sediment from agricultural sources to Green Bay. Our overall project goals and objectives are to quantify phosphorus and sediment sources and loads, evaluate the cost effectiveness of management approaches, and work with farmers to evaluate barriers to practice adoption. The project goals will be accomplished by combining biophysical and human dimensions research with outreach and extension activities. Throughout all aspects of this project, a stakeholder advisory group will be used to help guide and influence the proposed project to ensure that our efforts maintain local relevance. Specific tasks to accomplish our project goals include validated multi-scale modeling, field-based phosphorus hazard ratings at the watershed and sub-watershed scales, targeted water quality monitoring, nutrient management education for farmers, cost analysis of alternative management scenarios, evaluation of the beliefs and behaviors of agricultural producers, and targeted activities. The information learned through these tasks will be used to select and implement management practices that are most likely to succeed. All aspects of our proposed project are directly relevant to the National Water Program purpose of creating and disseminating knowledge at the community and watershed scale to insure a safe and reliable source of water of appropriate quality.
