Maidens in the Vale

release date: Apr 28, 2023
Maidens in the Vale
The Master Submariner has finally surfaced. Patrick Robinson, who wrote a dazzling series of best sellers about submarine warfare (guided by ex-Royal Navy Underwater Chief and Falklands War Battle Group Commander, Admiral Sir Sandy Woodward) has written his first book in five years, Maidens In The Vale. It''s a page-turning thriller about revenge, murder on an international scale, posing the electrifying modern question - can a young woman be so shockingly abused, that any action she subsequently takes is justified? She''s beautiful, young, expensively educated in England, although Russian by birth and heritage. But her uncle, her mum''s brother, is an ex-KGB assassin. He''s a ''diplomat'' now, based in London. He and his niece make a fire-proof and vengeful combination - driving international Police Forces almost crazy with frustration. Robinson''s areas of some expertise include horseracing, boxing, rowing, Special Forces, and military thrillers, including residents of the Lubyanka, Uncle Rudy''s home base in Moscow. He also knows a thing or two about London''s aristocracy (he was once a much-feared writer on the legendary William Hickey Society Column, Daily Express), It''s all woven into this complex story, and it''s marginally held in place by the most unlikely romance - when the Scotland Yard Superintendent is utterly captivated by his possible prime suspect. Meanwhile, his own mother, the daughter of a Scottish Duke, nearly steals the show, as a droll and irreverent matriarch, like Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey. The book will keep you guessing to the very last page, as it deals with a devastating High Court ''crime'' which dare not speak its name.

Improving Water Quality in Lower Fox River Watersheds Through Increased Understanding of Biophysical and Human Dimensions
Green Bay is a Lake Michigan resource of national significance that is severely impacted by phosphorus and sediment export from the Lower Fox River Basin. This project will provide an important opportunity to build upon and leverage past work related to the delivery of phosphorus and sediment from agricultural sources to Green Bay. Our overall project goals and objectives are to quantify phosphorus and sediment sources and loads, evaluate the cost effectiveness of management approaches, and work with farmers to evaluate barriers to practice adoption. The project goals will be accomplished by combining biophysical and human dimensions research with outreach and extension activities. Throughout all aspects of this project, a stakeholder advisory group will be used to help guide and influence the proposed project to ensure that our efforts maintain local relevance. Specific tasks to accomplish our project goals include validated multi-scale modeling, field-based phosphorus hazard ratings at the watershed and sub-watershed scales, targeted water quality monitoring, nutrient management education for farmers, cost analysis of alternative management scenarios, evaluation of the beliefs and behaviors of agricultural producers, and targeted activities. The information learned through these tasks will be used to select and implement management practices that are most likely to succeed. All aspects of our proposed project are directly relevant to the National Water Program purpose of creating and disseminating knowledge at the community and watershed scale to insure a safe and reliable source of water of appropriate quality.

Planning for Climate Change in the Laurentian Great Lakes Basin -- a NOAA Needs Assessment -- Final Report
"The primary objective for conducting this study is to increase adaptive capacity by informing and developing climate change adaptation training workshops. To ensure that training meets priority needs and provides accessible and applicable tools and resources, these organizations have collaborated to conduct a needs assessment: a comprehensive front-end evaluation of the climate change adaptation training and information needs of Great Lakes coastal communities. Presented here are the results of a needs assessment completed in 2011, engaging nearly 700 stakeholders across the Basin through interviews, focus groups, and an online survey"--Executive summary.
