BACK COUNTRY Ex-G.I. Brad Dolan is traveling through central Florida, trying to forget his past, when his car breaks down. Poetry. In PLAYTIME, William Fuller offers dispatches from a strange world. Through deadpan memoranda and dark parables, he addresses uncommon topics from witchcraft to vegetable life. Yet his focus often swerves from recognizable phenomena to the unobservable edges: "We are always searching in vain. Something moves, making us aware that once we were more aware." And in that striving, shared between writer and reader, Fuller suggests that this strange world is decidedly ours.

These poems were written over a period of several years. They cover a range of topics from memories of segregation in Alabama, to high school loves, to the discovery of an exotic, albeit unsavory, world from Malaysia to the Philippines. Back in the U.S., the elation and heartbreak of love led to philosophical skepticism which he expressed in brutal sarcasm. Both the light and darkness of life can be found here.

Quorum, the latest book from William Fuller, is a collection of vivid detours and deadpan visions arranged into forty-five sonnet-like poems. Employing an ear "that hears not what the eye / sees not, in detail," the poet makes his rounds through a menagerie of abstract persons and personified abstractions, carefully feeding them "their weight in flowers," to achieve the idiosyncratic consistency of a world transected by allusive filaments of "clouds that don't exist." Metaphysical wit freezes up the system and then gives it a liquidity. But "there's a trace of something else that slips in," which the poet seems at pains to not identify. If it's not quite song, neither is it simply irony, nor is it a desire to exceed these, although all are required to make a quorum. "Fuller's work is engaging on a deep level like only the great works are. In Watchword, William Fuller plots the paths of consciousness with sensitivity and precision. Pivoting on what he has elsewhere called "transfer points almost too elusive to name," his poems shift—sometimes mid-word—between languages of commerce, the natural sciences, and seventeenth-century Neoplatonism (among others). Such moments of exchange elicit both wonder and horror; what emerges is a marriage of heaven and hell.
