Psychology: Briefer Course

release date: Jun 13, 2022
Psychology: Briefer Course
In "Psychology: Briefer Course," William James condenses his groundbreaking ideas from his earlier work, "The Principles of Psychology," offering readers an accessible yet profound exploration of the human mind. This volume represents a crucial synthesis of his thoughts on consciousness, behavior, and emotion, articulating his pragmatist philosophy while employing a clear and engaging literary style. James''s reflections on the functional aspects of mental processes reveal the interplay between experience and thought, situating the work within the late 19th-century psychological discourse that bridged empiricism and introspection. William James, often regarded as the father of American psychology, was profoundly influenced by the scientific advances of his time, as well as his philosophical inquiries into the nature of existence. His dual background in philosophy and physiology uniquely shaped his understanding of the mind, allowing him to approach psychology with both a scientific and a humanistic lens. His prior studies and the philosophical environment at Harvard undoubtedly propelled him to distill complex concepts into a more digestible format, appealing to both academic and general audiences. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in the foundations of psychology, offering insights that are as relevant today as they were over a century ago. Readers will gain a valuable perspective on human behavior and thought processes, making it an indispensable resource for students, scholars, and anyone curious about the intricacies of the mind.

William James on Habit, Will, Truth, and the Meaning of Life
William James, the radical modern philosopher and father of American psychology, found habit and will to be the secret of a good life. He elaborated this discovery into a philosophy of life that runs through his many scintillating writings, ranging from psychology and religion to pragmatism and war. Always he urged people to cultivate habits of mind---especially habits of will, including the power to break bad habits---that give us self-mastery. alert us to truth, equip us to act, and lend zest to life. In the extensive introduction James Sloan Allen shows how William James came to his philosophy of life and how he played it out in ideas and works that have immediate value today. In the selections that are included in the book, we see William James weaving his philosophy through classic writings on habit and its uses, consciousness and the discipline of will, the efficacy of belief and clues to morality, the truths of experience, and the strenuous life and its rewards.

Human Immortality

Human Immortality
Originally a lecture given at Harvard as part of the Ingersoll Lecture on Immortality, this small volume is psychologist William James''s updated second edition, which addresses criticisms levied against his original work on the nature of human immortality. James sees the individual soul as part of a greater soul, hidden behind the veil of death. And that greater soul, perhaps God, perhaps an essence that defies description, is eternal. James brings together modern science and mysticism to show his audience that the two are not as incompatible as they might have believed. Spiritual seekers, religious individuals, and even skeptics will find this discussion on the possibility of immortality thought-provoking and electric.American psychologist and philosopher WILLIAM JAMES (1842-1910), brother of novelist Henry James, was a groundbreaking researcher at Harvard University and one of the most popular thinkers of the 19th century. Among his many works are Principles of Psychology (1890) and The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature (1902).

Some Problems of Philosophy

release date: Jan 01, 1996
Some Problems of Philosophy
With the clarity that James deemed obligatory, Some Problems of Philosophy outlines his theory of perception. The early chapters expose the defects of intellectualism and monism and the advantages of empiricism and pluralism. The novelty that enters into concrete perceptual experience, and that is disallowed by the rationalizing intellect, suggests exciting possibilities. Denied any absolute truth in an ever-changing world, privy to only a piece of the truth at any given moment, the individual can, with faith and good will, help create order out of chaos. Some Problems in Philosophy, published posthumously, represents an important advance in William James’s thought.

Essays in Psychology

Essays in Psychology
The twenty-nine articles, essays, and reviews in this volume, collected here for the first time, were published by William James over a long span of years, from 1878 (twelve years prior to The Principles of Psychology) to 1906. Some are theoretical; others examine specific psychological phenomena or report the results of experiments James had conducted. Written for the most part for a scholarly rather than a popular audience, they exhibit James''s characteristic lucidity and persuasiveness, and they reveal the roots and development of his view on a wide range of psychological issues. As William R. Woodward notes in his Introduction, these essays "bring the reader closer to James''s sources, thereby illuminating his indebtedness to tradition as well as his creative departure from it."

A Pluralistic Universe

A Pluralistic Universe
In May 1908 William James, a gifted and popular lecturer, delivered a series of eight Hibbert Lectures at Manchester College, Oxford, on "The Present Situation in Philosophy." These were published a year later as A Pluralistic Universe. During the preceding decade James, as he struggled with deep conflicts within his own philosophic development, had become increasingly preoccupied with epistemological and metaphysical issues. He saw serious inadequacies in the forms of absolute and monistic idealism dominant in England and the United States, and he used the lectures to attack the specific form that "vicious intellectualism" had taken. In A Pluralistic Universe James captures a new philosophic vision, at once intimate and realistic. He shares with his readers a view of the universe that is fresh, active, and novel. The message conveyed is as relevant today as it was in his time. This is the fourth volume of The Works of William James in an authoritative edition sponsored by the American Council of Learned Societies. Prepared according to modern standards of textual scholarship, this series utilizes all available published and unpublished materials; its texts have been awarded the seal of approval of the Center for Editions of American Authors. Frederick Burkhardt is General Editor; Fredson Bowers, Textual Editor; Ignas K. Skrupskelis, Associate Editor.

Essays in Radical Empiricism

Essays in Radical Empiricism
These 12 pieces display the influential philosopher''s preoccupation with ultimate reality and his turn toward a metaphysical system. Originally published in journals between 1904 and 1906, these essays argue in favor of a pluralistic universe. James denies that experience can be defined in terms of an absolute force determining the relationships between things and events.
