imzjøhni
Have you ever wondered what the English language would look like if words were spelt correctly? This is a poem about a journey of discovery through the Himalayas, but a poem written phonetically. And it is not just that; it also contains a number of other linguistic innovations. The phonetic system is based on the 29 sounds we actually use in English. The letters ‘c’, ‘q’, and ‘x’ are not used as they repeat existing sounds, notably ‘k’ and ‘s’. Six new letters are introduced: • ø (e in ‘the’) — slashed o (a vowel we use rather a lot) • ð (th in ‘the’) — eth • þ (th in ‘thing’) — thorn • ʧ (ch in ‘chit’) • ʃ (sh in ‘shit’) — esh • ʒ (s in ‘vision’) — ezh. A synthetic linguistic system is used of complex objects arranged as subject/verb/object. Adverbs, pronouns, and prepositions attach to verbs and adjectives and articles to nouns and noun phrases. There are variations of this structure dependent on considerations such as syntax, use of idiom, photographic depictions, and types of conjunctions. In terms of fonts, different ones feature as appropriate to the context, such as a one-off use of Runic, Klingon, and Linear B. Where normal rhyme is used, the line is right-aligned so the rhymes fall under each other, a more logical approach than the standard left alignment. Left alignment is only used where the rhyme is on the first syllable of the sentence, as in a novel terza rima scheme used in one of the chapters. Centering occurs where there is only metre, not rhyme. Various metrical and rhyme schemata feature, both standard and innovative; for example, in terms of innovation, a boustrophedon rhyme scheme and a trochaic final foot in the rerendered Jataka tales. In summary, the poem, albeit both comic and philosophical, is also a linguistic exercise and with an aesthetic aim: an attempt to revive interest in the sound of words and depict what our language actually looks like in an artistic way. The aesthetic is emphasised by the use of colour, different types of linguistic symbols, and illustrations.

Allied Coastal Forces of World War II.

release date: Jan 01, 2019
Allied Coastal Forces of World War II.
The major contribution made by Coastal Forces to the Allied war effort has had surprisingly little coverage in the literature of the Second World War. Motor torpedo boats, PT boats, motor gunboats, launches and submarine chasers served with distinction throughout the war, and in every theatre. They performed invaluable service as patrol boats, convoy escorts, minelayers and minesweepers, harbour defence vessels, light landing craft, RAF rescue boats and transports for agents and clandestine missions. Allied Coastal Forces, now a recognised classic work and first published in 1990, remains the only publication to deal comprehensively - in words, photographs and drawings - with the technical detail of all these boats. Design, construction and subsequent development are all covered, and the builders, construction lists, fates and the technical data are given for each type. Separate sections cover armament and equipment, sea-going qualities and habitability. This second volume covers sixteen Vosper MTB designs and the US 70ft, 77ft and 80ft ELCO designs. US-built Vosper designs supplied under lease-lend are also covered, while weapons systems and machinery are dealt with in detail. Some 700 finely detailed drawings were drawn by the authors for this second volume in their highly acclaimed two-volume work. AUTHORS: John Lambert spent nine years in the Royal Navy where he acquired his detailed technical knowledge of warships. His subsequent research on small warships and naval weaponry, combined with his remarkable technical drawing skills, led to the creation of a body of work some of which is displayed in this volume. He died in 2015. Al Ross II is the author of several books on small warships and since the 1980s has been producing a series of plans for modellers of small combatants of the Second World War and Vietnam eras. He lives in Bangor, Maine, USA. 150 b/w photographs, 700 line drawings, 12 colour camouflage schemes

Medicinal Plants
All 15 new independent states established in the economic space of the former Soviet Union suffered big declines in output and trade after their independence. This study summarizes cross-country experience on the role of trade and payments policies in the linked contraction of output and trade by drawing on eight country case studies: Estonia, the Kyrgyz Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. The results of the case studies show that trade reform and reorientation of trade toward the rest of the world have done much to arrest the decline in output usually associated with the transformation from plan to market. Also available in Russian: Stock no. 13687 (ISBN 0-8213-3687-8).

This book provides the finest documentation of these uniquely fast small warships ever produced, through a complete set of superbly executed line drawings offering enthusiasts a novel insight into ship design and construction.
